Title: Any DR650's for sale?
Post by: bomskok on November 30, 2011, 09:11:21 am
I've posted a wanted add in the for sale section and I'm looking for a DS type with my budget only about R25 cash. (realistically only R22k for now but can increase at a squeeze, reluctantly.)

Anyway, I am wondering if there are any Dr650's for sale in the region of R22k.

Also, I will be looking at a '98 model sometime this week. Can you give me a few tips to look out for please? My biggest concern is reliability so engine/drivetrain needs to be in good nick (will service if I buy anyway) I guess. Seat & tank damage can be fixed/replaced so not too worried. Steering head bearings: How to check on these bikes? Anything to check on the swingarm (and how please?)

Thanks

I bought my '99 for R 22k via Gumtree in June 2010. Very good condition. 24 000 kms.

It was incorrectly listed as an '01, and the owner wanted R 30k initially. I paid half retail/trade.

Speak to Lecap on the Forum. He is your DR expert.

There is an issue with starter torque limiters not being fitted, to the '98 and '99 models. This could result in damage to the LH crankcase. You will have to open up to check! (Easy!)

Good luck! They are fantastic bikes!

Thanks for the feedback. I dropped lecap an email asking for advice, no reply as yet.

Looked at bike last night. Must admit it looks neglected. Power like there is no tomorrow so engine seems fine from what I can see. Seat is shot, rear footpegs bent, dent in tank, brake pads gone, front tire moeg, no lights on console, indicators dead.... Don't think think it was serviced in a while....

I offered him R15k, but in hindsight was too much. Think there is at least R5ks work on it to get it through test. Lots of cosmetic work after that.... He wants more than that so I think I'm ah walkin'...

My advice...walk away!

Be patient...and even be prepared to pay a bit more for a good condition bike.

Its cost plenty to have a bike repaired. You'll regret being a piece of scrap.

Dankie vir die advies.

I've slept on it and to be honest after getting a second opinion from the dealer I've pretty much made up my mind and walking away. I'm pushed for time in that I need it as a commuter so the logistics is a bit of a nightmare but that stuff normally sorts itself out somehow.

Was quite impressed by the power it has but looking at the bigger picture too much work for too much moola.

I'll keep looking.
