So – where do I start??
December is holiday time and what better can we do than to go on a trip. Spoedvark, my neighbour ::) ::), approached me and asked if we can’t do Lesotho, but I was in the mood for the Western Cape . .
I then received a sms from Mr+P (Neville) asking if I’m doing something as his wife is away for a few days. So 2 + 1 makes 3 . . . and within a minute, Mr P was included. David (not a WD) was contacted as I know he cannot wait to do Baviaans and he had to look at his dairy first . . . Demmit – just come along.
So….. 2 + 1 + 1 makes 4.
The route?? After I spoke to ChrisL, Visarend & Kallie a lot of information and routes were given, but due to time etc, we didn’t do them all. Always a next time and a reason for another trip. Thanks to you all we gave input. Much appreciated.
My stats for my bike is mentioned at every day, but in total I rode 1 787.9 km of which 37% was gravel (not much, but we enjoyed every single moment!!) I used 108.01 litres of Petrol and it gives me an average of 16.53 km/l. The accommodation costs were R980.00 @ R245.00 / night. We only booked the first night @ Kudu Kaya near the entrance at Baviaans. The plan was to sleep the 1st night at Kudu Kaya, 2nd night at prins Albert, then George and then it was open to the floor as it was only me and David left as Mr+P & Spoedvark had to go home due to family commitments.
We left the morning of the 17th before 6 as Spoedvark had to meet some of his family in Patensie before 11. So we left East London by tar and went there via Port Alfred & PE for Patensie.
Milage for today: 373 km - basicly all tar. here are some kiekies.

While we waited for our food, I took some kiekies.

Maybe I must use this bike for Baviaans, but those tight corners . . .
Or maybe this one, but then I must take the lawnmower with >:(

They can also feel the feul shortage in Patensie
(http://jmol.co.za/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=2799&g2_serialNumber=2)
And then the food was there - what a nice bunch of friendly people!!
After we were "lekker dik gevreet", we left for Kudu Kaya where we booked

I'll confess - when I saw the Rhino on the board, I started to make my sums of how and how fast i must move to stay ahead of the rhino if he chases me. Luckly nothing like that happened ;D

That is why we fit a snorkel on the boxers for water crossings! - Kreep Krauly pipe, R10 - fixed. :3some:
n' Engelsman maak 'n plan :ricky:
See ree arse lee ... I got my 1150 hydro-locked in the exact same place some years back (on my own!) - why BMW is still so fookin stubborn to insist on the air intake design fault (yes FAULT!) only they know! All you need is that wake off the front wheel and the air intake scoops buckets. Yes you can pull the plugs, turn the motor to shoot the water out, dry the filter etc etc BUt if not very careful you will strip the starter ring gear first trying to start the locked engine! The Kreepy Kraully hose (or vacuum cleaner) is now well documented (I have a link somewhere of my farkle) and does not need to be a permanent filtting - it can just be zip tied in place and the end inserted in the intake when needed and tucked away when not. :thumleft:
-
At the 2nd last "big" watercrossing, Spoedvark went through - very slow and bang bang - nothing. David went - and the same. Bikes are dead as mossies. Mr+P went through and his Dakar just bam bam through the water. I went - and came out safe the other side. Here is a kiekie of the crossing - don't know the name.
No problem - we have plug spanner, BUT THEY DIDN'T FIT >:(
Luckily Spoedvark's family was coming from the opposite side and after Mr+P and I went forward to see if the were close, they came and help us. One of their bikes also drowned at the crossing.
If it wasn't for the guy at the right we would have been there for much longer - thanks my friend. Cannot remember your name.
After fitted a kreepy krauly pipe John (from Bloemfontein) told his wife to climb and off the go.
This is the crossing just before the gate on Willowmore's side. Neville and I went through it 3 times and after what happened to the rest, we were a bit "versigtig" going through.
David doesn't want to take a change and he and Spoedvark is taking the bike for a walk :ricky:

After we filled up at Willowmore, we left for Prins Albert by tar. Due to time, we didn't do the loop ChrisL told me to do, but I have to go back to do it ChrisL.

Those of you who knows me, knows that I'm afraid of downhills. But I went to a few places with David before this trip "training"my downhills to get rid of the fear . . . but this little short downhill with it's turn at the end was playing in my head the whole trip and here it is. I know if I don't make it, I'm down within seconds, but I have to tell you that I made it. :laughing4: After this I don't think I am as scared of downhills as what I used to be, but as they say - with practice comes perfect :deal:

Thanks Guys - Big Dom - I'll ask Spoedvark to reply on that as he has 1st hand knowledge of what happened. Ek's net die Boertjie hier rond  Although he guided me throught the water, I came out clean and they got water in their intakes. Strange, but I think it was just my lucky day as I was the only 1200 that went through without a mishap except for John who fitted a kreepy krauly pipe and another guy (also from Bloemfontein) who pushed his bike through the water.

And so day 4 started in George - nice and cool and the plan was to do the 7 passes that ends (I think) in Knysna where Mr+P & Spoedvark will leave us as the have family commitments ;)
Their are no specific plans as we have 2 days left to get home . . . . At the end the milage we did was 311 km of which 164 km were gravel. We ended in Steytlerville after another HOT SUMMER day in Africa.
I'll again let the kiekies do the talking . . . . as we left George on the Saasveld road.

After the breakfast we went up the Prins Alferd Pass towards Avontuur. The guys must help me here, but I think we had the most cars on this road / pass, specially the section from Angie's.

Here David just woke up and we decided that we are too tired to do gravel towards Steytlerville and decided to go via the tar & cement roads.

Jou fotos is asemrowend!

Baie dankie Nannie.

Eventually we ended on the R400 and this road just goes on and on and on. David is a much faster rider than what I am so I told him to carry on in the meantime and so every now and then, we meet each other.

Oom Theuns se Winkel next to the N9 between Cookhouse & Paterson. The plan was to meet David here, but the lady told me that she saw no bike and immediately I thought David is lost or is lying somewhere in a sloot. He has no Cellphone - how on earth will I get hold of him again I thought??
Later 2 farm labourers walked in and they said that they saw a bike on the road going toward Riebeeck East. Thanks goodness - David is alive and he'll wait for me. I had a nice cold Fanta and sami and off I go.

To you all - thanks for travelling with and all the comments. Much appreciated.

Nice ride report, sitting here in Malawi for the next 9 months, I think of the roads and the area and when I see the photos I think of the times I have ridden there.
Thanks for sharing.
With regards the water crossings, it is the same story with a car, bakkie. Don't enter too fast, don't ride into the bow wave which is in front of you and don't stop as the water will surround you and water will be sucked in. That is why some bikes made it and other not. Same bikes yet some suffered and other not.
Just something I learned at 4x4 training and also at Country Trax when doing water crossings.
-
Wel gedaan jong man. :imaposer:

:peepwall:

As a matter of interest - I bought handlebar raisers before the trip and it helped a lot as my back wasn't so stiff.
I also have to be much fitter next time as fituge played a big role - or maybe it was he heat . . . . . and drink much more water

U should have had a daily SWIM like the rest of us!!!!!
Plonker - Tyres. Before this trip i had Battle Wings on and they are a nightmare in the dirt. Slightly better if you deflate. The Hydenhaus i put on before the trip are awesome. Good grip on tar and excellent for what we did. Was like riding a different bike. Im sold on them. Now just to see what K's I get out of them. My only complaint is the road noise off the front tyre on the tar and that at 160 i start to get a slight shake on the steering with these. Did not have that problem with the Battlewings. 220 steady as if on rails.
As an alrounder i think the Hydenhaus are going to be a very good buy.

Great breakaway trip you guys had. :thumleft:
I tried to ambush you guys at Sundays River but missed you all by a minute or two.

Spoedvraat pm'ed me this RR and it looked amazing
we went to the hell yesterday but Rob that went with us had a difficult time on his 1200GS with road tyres. We went from George in the morning and went out of the hell at 2 and arrived 6h30 back in George.
Julle het letterlik wyd gery!
Wat maak mens as jou bike gaan staan in die hel? Dis altyd my worry as ek hel toe ry.
