The BMW R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure have broken all records at BMW. They have just rolled out the 100,000th unit, after some 2 years of introducing this popular motorcycle.
The 100,000 consist of R1200GS and the Adventure model (15,600 units). In the same time frame, only half of the old motorcycle, the R1150GS, were sold, so the 1200 version sold twice as many.

That it sells twice as fast as the predecessor is a great marketing & engineering achievement. I have no idea how those sales compare to the direct competitors like the KTM 990.
It is interesting that there are 3 okes with short sleeve shirts in the photo. Not a suit to be seen - more marketing?

I wonder how many discs they have replaced under warranty? >:D >:D

This explains alot IMHO.
Why there's so much jelousy and BMW bashing going around. Normally experimental-bikes don't sell well (i.e. Benelli), they tend to be more rather a niche products, but BMW has broken that line and proven so called "experimental" (first DS with ABS, shaft drive, a DS with telelever, paralever, catalythic converter, add to that a lardy boxer engine, standard heated grips, different turn signals etc etc) bikes can sell very successfully if put into correct, user friendly (DS that is) package.
Socio-political result: jelousy and bashing.
One black sheep among cattle of whites is always hated and bashed. :D
2nd social fact is that any new and different approach or phenomenon that turns out to be different but also more popular than the old approach (good exaple is Einstein's special relativity theory) gets much more opponents, haters and bashers than the old-world's point of view got, but still remains to be the most popular and widely accepted theory among the scientist. But at the same time it has the most opponens, bashers and haters than any theory has ever got in the past.
I'd say pretty much the same phenomenon is happening in the marketing world. The more popular you get with a new approach, the more opponents-haters-bashers you collect.
For example in germany, BMW GS is the most buyed (you can translate it "the most popular") in its class but at the same time the most hated motorcycle trademark, statistics study shows.
Interpretations I leave to you... ;)

Search around on this forum, or ANY other motorcycle forum and name me the trademark that is the most hated and bashed and try to understand why. Then you'll understand. ;D
EDIT: Good start here, see how many replys:

I dont see this thread to be bashing BMW in any way. Or am I wrong - all okes talking about rims ride the BMW's themselves.

No, just representing common myth. Seriously answered btw. ;D

Believe me, sooner or later this all turns into another BMW bash fest, 100 000 number is just another excuse to bash, whether in this or in another thread, I'm relatively sure about this ;D

Come on. Harley Davidson is bashed way more than BMW. The common denominator between the two, and why they get bashed, is 'Lifestyle'. Nothing to do with ground-breaking design or technology - Harley proves my point.

That's precisely my point.
Can you imagine there are now over 100 000 of those guys are fully lifestyle oriented riders only, no real riders, don't know anything about biking, they all buy tonz of expensive Touratech aftermarket crap, expensive Rukka or BMW clothing, always stand while riding, Arai Tour-X posers, never wave to others, all in all BMWs are sh*t bikes, big ugly unreliable awfully underpowered pigs, they never learn in that factory, BMW really does suck as said before.
But there are now over 100 000 of those guys riding the roads!!!??? That's a bloody shame to us all IMHO! ;D

Back to topic.
100 000 bikes in the 1200 sized engine over that length of time is an awesome achievement. Good marketing, good selling and good back up service. I will take a few lessons from that.

You forgot to mention good styling - probably the nicest looking of all DS bikes at present, and that from an eternal KTM fan.

Jis those 1200 bikes are common, very happy I opted for the HP2 now ;D
