Title: Durban to Zanzibar - 9400 KM, 7 Countries,
Post by: imo on January 25, 2012, 01:13:46 am
This is an account of our adventure (perhaps even a mid life crisis!!).  SKEET (Shaun Keet) and i (Imo or Imran) went on an epic ride from Durban to Zanzibar.  This is a brief account of our travels.....Enjoy and lets share info.

2 Days to D Day

My nerves are shattered!!  Everyone i speak with has tales of crazy truck drivers in Tanzania, Be Carefull!!!  Be Wide Awake!!......is this really a good idea, i wonder?  Am i mad?

So the first of many trial packing begins, eventually decided on the absolute essentials and laid it out out, it all fitted perfectly, i feel better.

Day 1

Shaun had a wedding to attend in Mooi River, so day 1 was an uneventfull 200km stroll to Sierra Ranch.  Met a couple travelling on a 1200GS and an 800GS from JHB on their way to Margate.

Day 2

An early start saw us on our way to JHB, now the trip has begun ;D

Stayed at a backpackers in JHB...All is relaxed.  Get settled and then realised i lost my gloves somehow, after a frantic search i rush off to buy new gloves.  Later i found my gloves....oh well at least i have a spare pair.

Its gonna be an early nite, tomorrow we are off to Botswana, the adventure really only begins now ;D

Its 9pm and my fone goes off.....Its an in contact message from FNB....hang on!! whats this?! R1000.00 has been deducted from my account, the reference is "cc@google", this is not right, whoa!!!! WTF!!  another sms and another R1000 and another and then R300 and then R500, and this went on for a few minutes, i quickly log on to internet banking while trying to get hold of the bank on the fone.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i can see the balance on my account rapidly decreasing, what the fuck is going on here, i will not disclose the amount, but a HUGE sum was deducted from my account.  I HAVE BEEN A VICTIM OF INTERNET FRAUD!!!a great way to start a trip!!

Day 2 Contd......

Its confirmed, my account has been compromised!!.....its a looooong story of how this came to be, in short it was the doing of an incompetent bank admin clerk!!

i am instructed to go to a branch in the morning and open a case of fraud, all funds will be reversed i am told.  i am sure glad this happened while i was still in the coiuntry.

Suffice to say, that night was a very restless sleep

Paperwork completed, we set off for Botswana ;D

we left JHB late and arrived in Gaberone at sunset, we stayed at Mokolodi Backpackers, what an awesome spot.  The ride so far has been great, our asses are uncomfortable and have not yet found the vibrations of the single inviting......our asses, nose, face....everything is twitching from the vibrations!!

Tonite is a one nighter and we are off to Francistown tomorrow

Hey Guys,

Keep posting! Your trip looks great! My buddy and I are doing almost the same trip from Pretoria through Botswana, Zim, Moz and then into Tanzania in September. By the way, I live and work in Arusha in Tanzania, and it is not just the truck drivers to whatch out for in Tanzania, there are hardly nay road signs and the road users have hardly any regard for each other or any road users other than themselves. BE SAFE! Rather pull over than take a chance!!! I sometimes don't even feel safe in the companies LAND CRUISER!!!

When do you reach or Intend reaching Zanzibar?

Regards

Drew
