Title: Auf Wedersiehen - Cape Town
Post by: Ama ride ride on August 07, 2007, 08:57:50 am
Finally I bought a memory card reader to download long lost pics.....

February this year I flew down to CTN to fetch my scooter and so ending a phase of my live.

Du Toitskloof pass...Looking back at my old hometown - Paarl
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0369.jpg)

The mountain on the far right background - Paarde berg. My dad's wine farm was there
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0368.jpg)

I decided to take tar to Sutherland and then gravel onwards. Stopped at Touwsrivier to full up
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0373.jpg)

and took a pic of this oke who tried to hitch a ride.

The Karoo is my favorite place in SA.....I just love the emptyness
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0374.jpg)
In the Karoo it does not matter where the  road end.....just follow it.

February can be hot....My trusty steed taking a breather in the shade.

Nearing Sutherland
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0378.jpg)
This little kloof will never become a Fish river Canyon...but it will keep on trying for eons to come
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0379.jpg)

I never liked Sutherland much but the roads to and fro are some of the best. Did not stop and went on to Fraserburg

Outside town. like a stuff nipple the SALT telescope (deepspace) keep a lookout on things
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0381.jpg)
Locked gate.....
But the start of the gravel....
Karoo highway....far better than the N1
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0389.jpg)
Neverending gravel road....what more does one want?
Stopped for some water......its a dry but beautiful place
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0394.jpg)
The gravel keep on changing color and texture...from gray
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0393.jpg)
to red....

Fraserburg come and went.....so did Loxton. I had 30 litres of fuel with me. So there was no need to stop in the towns.

Stopped somewhere....just for the sake to stop
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0396.jpg)
My two favorite features og my bike...
The left nipple
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0397.jpg)
...and the right nipple.....
...empty tar road coming from nowhere...going to nowhere
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0395.jpg)

Some more pics somewhere in the Karoo...

The roads I love
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0400.jpg)
Then I hit the town of Victoria West.....with its famous landmark
(http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u183/exskydiver/IMGP0399.jpg)

Sadly.....my cameras batteries died when I stopped again for a pic....and I am afraid getting shot for posting a ride report without pics......So I will redo the trip sometime in the future to get the pics to add to the report.....

My name is Ama ride ride and I love the Karoo.....

Tks mate, just a question, any reason why you have a knobbie on the front and an ordinary DS on the rear? ???

A knobblie front handles dirt way easier than a DS tyre. But TKC's are moer expensive. IMO a TKC in the back makes a difference in only the top 5% to 10% in degree of difficulty. So for daily use and normal gravel which counts for 70% of all riding its plain useless to fit a TKC in the back.  A back tyre losing grip on gravel is however far easier to correct than the front.  ;)

I'm with ARR on this one - running TKC front and Scorpion rear - excellent combo.

+1
The Karoo is the place where you can't run away from yourself. Its immense and small at the same time.
Great pics Ama. Thanks.
