Title: Best "knobbly" tyres for the 690?
Post by: edgy on March 01, 2012, 11:43:16 am
My KTM 690 came with TKC`s from new,the rear is now pretty done at 3600 kms. What are the guys using on the back and what kilos you getting? I always used the Dunlop Rally Raid on the SE and loved it but its far too hard for the smaller bikes!

You can't beat the Michelin Desert rear, much better than the TKC  :thumleft:

Yup that works good !! I have a personal thing about mixing brands off tyres on a bike !!! Nothing wrong but I don't do it !! I use the Michelin Desert Front and Rear.Rear I run a 140/80/18,the front is very very good on gravel but not to lekker on Tar....I use it but a rider doing 50/50 DS riding will probably be better off with a Michelin T63 or the dunlop D606 or  TKC ,But a rear TKC is crap offroad compeared to a Desert on a 690 !! The Conti's wil give you more KM'S though !!! :mwink:

Both my 990 riding buddies swear by the Mitas E-07. I am using the E-09 (more off-road)

edit. oops, I mis-read your 690 for a 990 !

Mitas E-07 rear, and the Pirelli MT21 rallyecross front. Gaan bars, jy kry nie n beter kombinasie.

Is that why the desert can only last from East London to Queenstown on a SE before its Faaarked (complete slick and thrown knobbly's )  I am sure Edgy has Pic's. ;)

I am getting a Kendra Big Block for the SE. I think it will be a good compromise between cost, milage and performance. I paid R1060 from a vendor and was able to collect in CT saving transport costs.

The reports I have read say it is better in the dirt and not as good on the tar as the TKC, while giving the same or better milage.

But saying that I use deserts back and front on the 640. The first few hundred km on tar are very entertaining.

I got the Mitas E10 on my XC and it grips like hell on everything. Its the only tire I've ever put on my dual sport bikes that has not thrown knobs off. It only gave me 1200km though but they were km full of grip. The 690 has got more power than the XC so let us know how long it lasts on your bike.

I've just replaced my E-09 with an E-07 on the rear of my pig. The E-09 gave me 7000km of hassle-free riding (75% dirt). I'm expecting to do        10 000km on the E-07.

10k is a lot of km's and pretty good value. According to Runner the C02 is only good for about 3000km's but in comparison I think it is a lot more aggressive nobbly

I put the C02 on for the East Cape bash and am very impressed! Did about 100kms and still looking good, sure 3000 kms about right....but with decent traction at a good price I`m happy :thumleft:
Interesingly enough it even looks good after TJ`s SE chewed on it for the weekend!

This is a serious tyre. The first 300 km were scary the bike was all over the place to the point that you could not exceed 100 km/h and even then it was dangerous. It settled down nicely and eventually was stable even up to 170km/h for short distances (it is a 140 km/h rated tyre). Not many serious off road tyres stand up to the SE but this one seems to be holding up. I constantly thought I would throw knobs but nothing. I know its limitations will be on the tar but we ride very little tar. It is only a 1000km old now but if it holds to 3000 I will be very happy.
