I had an atercation witha car lane splitting this morning - car on my left moved unexpectedly - swerved but still clipped the mirror - huge wobble and had to put my leg down to save the fall - kept it up, but the second I put the foot back on the peg I felt that the leg was broken. Rode the bike 2 kms back to the Wilgeheuwel hospital - they took me off the bike straight into a wheelchair, immobilised the leg and provided much needed drugs.
Opperation tomorrow to fix the shattered tibula.
I will be out of action for some time :( Still, it could have been much worse - at least I could avoid the fall.
-
Shit eona boet, get well soon and keep the faith!

Twas I Wheelman just missed you :thumleft:
Spoke to the family. He was in recovery with one eye tring to spy on the nurses :ricky:
Message later from his good lady Wilda was:
Tony out of theatre after many hours and now in ICU. Vital signs look good and he has spoken to me.
He feels no pain at the moment but has a built-in mecano set - I saw the xrays!
Wilda travels the same route as Tony to work so she happened to be a few hundred metres behind him when he had is incident. He phoned her and said "I've broken my leg. What do I do ... Where's the hospital.." So she rode alongside him to the hospital, getting weaker as he went along. Drenched in sweat on arrival. :o
Let me put this into perspective. I witnessed a similar injury a while ago - seven piece break on the same bone. The chap couldn't be moved an inch, even after 2 Myprodols. He refused to be moved. Just lifting him into a van had him screaming blue murder.
Tony, you're one tough SOB.

Strongs there Moondog. All these other comentators are woeseys. This lot always looks worse than it really is. (suck an extra few of those lekker big pain pills) In a day or two, the swelling will go down, and in a week those stiches will start itching (means it getting better and healthier) The worst is the waiting TIME, for the bones to grow inside. Thats what is not nice.
Get comfortable with lekker books etc.
Get well "slowly" boet :thumleft: ;D
-
When is this open house party. :D Please do tell. Must come visit.
-
Tweets, you are right - the most frustrating part is the wait - progress is so S L O W.
The house party is in Helderkruin - as soon as I am back on my hind legs again - but feel free to pop around any time - the bar is stocked ;)

better get a double script, just in case....
-
So what is the prognosis - how long will it be before you can get out there again?
-
I am officially booked off for 6 weeks, but should be able to go back to work in 2 weeks. I should also be able to drive or ride tar in 4 - 6 weeks. In 3 months the leg should operate 100 percent normally and be up to full strength in 6 months. They can remove the meccano in 12 to 18 months z- seems that is my call depending on if it bothers me. For now he is happy with the progress, but I am still finding it damn painful and am frustrated that getting around is such a PITA.
I will however not push it - I want this thing to heal properly.
-
Good luck with the healing process! :thumleft:
-
Hey Moondog,
Just seen this today. All the best with your recovery, glad you are okay. (thanks for your help in the mud at Stoffberg!!)

Thanks Tweets - to you and all the other dogs (Laurika, Wheelman, Adventurer, eSKaPe, Great White, White Rhino, Would-I, Malibu, Dee, and the list goes on) that have gone out of their way to visit and lift the spirits. It honestly means a lot to me.
I am healing well - today was my first voluntary outing from of the house - with some arm twisting by Misty and Laurika - had a great time at eSKaPe's birthday bash, and felt surprisingly strong. Every step forward feels like a small victory. Thanks guys!

What's that thing below the top 6 screws - a UFO?

What's that thing below the top 6 screws - a UFO?
Damn good question - damn the dogs are wide awake. It has had me wondering too - on my list of questions for the doctor. On the x-ray it isn't any clearer - looks like a metal shard / pin. X-Ray from the side doesnt help either but confirms that it is in the bone.
-
Good luck Tony....time to get back on a bike again! :thumleft:
-
Go well Tony. Get strong and heal well.

Just another roofing screw... :lol8:
I asked my ortho if mine needed to be removed.
"Ons kan... dit sal my Fortuner help betaal... of jy kan dit inlos... dit is jou keuse of jy weer die pyn van fisio wil ondergaan..." >:D
-
Thanks to everyone for the support, offers to help, transport, (toolkits) and all the well wishes!!!
I'm with you Rob - I did not plan to have it removed - or at least not for some time - but there is just to much metalwork in and around the knee joint - catching on tendons and othr moving soft tissue and it is preventing me from getting back to full strength - which means that I can't ride comfortably off-road (major decision making factor).
If it was just on a straight bone or was not bothering me, I would leave it in too, but I need to get rid of the pain and wierd feelings in my knees (which are often there, even when not reading the buttism thread) - so time to unscrew myself.

Thanks. Home today and in good spirits. Can walk, bear weight or use crutches, but will need to use my brace locked for the first 3 - 4 weeks as the doc had to tighten up a ligament. Still, wont be long before I a properly back on my hind legs.

Hi Tony,
I'm so glad that it's finally come out and that you can now start your real recovery - TAKE IT SLOWLY, don't rush the natural healing process dude. Looking forward to riding with you when you're able to do so.

Glad your adamantium is out, Moondog. :thumleft:
Is the drill bit also out? Is that the thing in the bottom right hand corner in the bag of toys?
-
Ek wonder hoeveel kos dit vir een van daai Self-tappers

Wheelman - that sounds like a plan - whill do.

Yep - the doc found some infection, so he decided to take out all foreign objects, including the broken drill bit. He broke it into three pieces before finally got it out.
The longer self tappers are a piece of art. Hollow, very sharp on the tip and even the threads are as sharp as a knife blade.
-
All the best to you Tony. Take it easy till you are 100% OK. Most expensive mechano set you will ever own.
-
Get well soon bud. Let me know how the recovery goes. I am interested. :thumleft:

Only a pleasure, Jo. To you and all the dogs that have taken the time to SMS, BBM, phone and visit, thank you so much - it's a privilege to be a part of a group like this!
To White Rhino, a special thanks for braving my wife's wrath by bringing a copy of Sport Illustrated, including the Swimsuit calendar for 2013. I put it up in a prominent spot in the house, and so far just sideways looks, but no snotklap yet :patch: - Priceless!

Hey Tony,
I was on my way to see you this afternoon when an idiot turned in front of me and I T-Boned her with my bike...
I'm OK - sprained wrist and bruised shin (going for X-Rays tomorrow).
Bikes front forks are stuffed - hope they don't write her off!!!
Sorry I couldn't make it - heal up my man. Hope you don't die of boredom.

Replied in your thread - this damn breaks my heart - so sorry that an honourable intention is now costing you! Let me know what the doc and the mechanic have to say please.

Bliksem Tony I never dreamt I would share your misfortune. Shaterred right tibia at the top. 5 pieces. Bones graft, kak house full of meccano in the top of my leg as well. My cut goes stright to the top of my knee otherise it looks the same. Getting queesy reading about your drill bit and stuff. Man its quite a juorney hey.
I have bloody steel staples holding the cut together, not stitches..At least those things are out now.
Lying here at home feeling sorri for myself, but forgot about that when I read about your infection. Pump the full course of antibiotics man, go for 13 day if necessary, watch out it doesn not return.
I just hope I dont have to wait 9 months before I have my steel out. Just started phsyio on Monday, and my bloody leg is still sore 4 weeks later.
Any wise words you might want to share?
Hope youre walking fine soon boet :thumleft: We will have to take a picture together sometime of our scars ;)
-
Well they got the lab results - "No Culture". Thats good news, but seriously, they had to use a 4 day lab test to figure out that I have no culture - could have told them that in the beginning!
BB, it seems like a long frustrating journey, but it actually goes quickly and every step forward is a milestone to celebrate - remember the feeling when you could take your first pee without a bottle, or a simple shower - its amazing how quickly we forget the victories - look for them and celebrate them.
My biggest learning is to go with your gut - you know your body better than any doctor - if something doesnt seem right, moan and complain, and if you don't get the reaction that you want, go and see another doctor. I was damn lucky that I insisted that the metal had to come out - if I had not, they would not have found the lurking infection in good time and who knows what damage it would have caused.
Today the wound is dry and swelling right down, and I am feeling great - cant wait to get the garish stitches out next week. Then 1 more week with the brace, and I can walk attachment free!
Thanks again to the dogs for the visits, messages, posts, etc. - they really make a huge difference.

Latest pic.

Now I get what u said about the stiches being "movie stiches" this time around...did he leave his glasses at home?? Sjoe!! Wound colour is normal!! Looking so good!!!!

They look more like mortuary stitches to me :eek7: They are apparently whats needed in the situation where they dont want infection - so no internal stitching or other foreign bodies, so they stitch wide and with a double loop that holds securely and wont pull out. They will make an impressive scar.
-
and chicks dig scars :thumleft: ;D

We can start a club with this injury...
I also had steel staples ... 20 something of them. Doc said plate should should stay in for 2 Years!!!
Neraly 7 months now and still battling with a weak leg...
But as Tony says, it goes quick and you have many really important milestones along the way. Its reall very debilitating at first, but we forget that quickly.
