Title: KTM 690 Adventure conversion
Post by: SpeedMetal on March 11, 2012, 06:50:38 pm
So what did you guys get upto this weekend? Bet my bottom dollar mine was better! Give any guy a pet project to convert a great bike into an even better one and you will find it hard to get that smile of his face!
So, here is my beloved KTM 690 R, ready to be converted for Amageza.

Armed with the Rally kit from Omega Fibreglass and my iPad for step by step instructions, I was ready to rock and roll.

First, strip her down to the bones which also turned out to be a good time to clean in all those usually not reached areas. Rewire all the cables and make a couple of minor mods to make space for the tanks.

First come the tanks and then the front subframe and lights cluster.

Once that was all fitted, it was easy enough to sort out all the electonics and fit the fairing, and before you knew it – voala! 1 times KTM 690 Adventure.

I must be honest, I was initally a bit apprehensive as this was a LOT of MOOLA, but after I got all the parts and realised the extend what Omega Fibregalss has gone through to design and build this fairing, tanks and subframe I was totally stoked!

For anyone looking to do this, all I can say is you wont be sorry. Initially feels a bit odd having this big fairing that stands still whilst you turn but for anyone that’s owened a 990 before, you get used to it quickly.

So there she is, cant wait to go put her through her paces. See you guys out there!

Please give us an indication of costs and also idea of time from ordering till you got it in hand.

How much extra fuel does it give you and how much does it increase your weight & effect the handling.

Thanx

Hey Dodo, costs are pretty much inline with what I have seen from the rest of the guys in the market but best speak to Omega fibreglass, you will find their details on their webpage. Nice thing is, it comes with a crash bar as well. (to protect your investment)  ;D

It took about a week from ordering until I collected it in JHB. If you are out of town it will probably take a bit longer for shipping etc.

Apparently it gives you about an extra 10 litres (2 x 5 litre) tanks. Weight I cannot say for sure but what I can say it feels very light, especially if you look at the quality of the materials and the finishing.

I ant to take it out in two weeks time fully fueled to see how it handles and to see what suspention settings I will need to change to accomodate for the extra weight. I will keep you posted.

Lol, dont think it is a secret, just dont think I should be mentioning numbers. All I can say is it is inline with what the rest of the guys are asking. Best give them a shout.

Compare to this. And further 500 pounds for tanks. All nice stuff though.

DID the same but with the rally raid coversion, Only thing is you have to sit a bit further back because your knees touch the tanks , so be gentle on the throttle as she wheelies even in third. Awesome.
Also could smell petrol but couldn't find a leak until i lay under the bike, then found it, If you fill up all three tanks she siphones to the back and over flows, so close the taps on front tanks and open them only when necessary.

Spoke to Thomas at Omega and you can get the entire kit with crash bars from him for R 21k.

Apparently the entire kit weighs about 8 kilos. I will check on the petrol overflow and let you know if I have the same problem.

Just some feedback, did te Amageza and nothing broke or fell off, everything just as sturdy as the day I fitted it.

so how does the bike handle compared to the stock version. Does the screen help offer protection from the wind or does it give a little head shake. O0

Hey, no headshake but I did harden the front suspension settings quite a bit and also have a Scotts steering damper on.

@arries - I'll take a pic over the weekend and post for you.
