Title: "Touring class" at the Desert Race?? ***MY ENTRY IS IN***
Post by: Panne on March 29, 2012, 01:50:40 pm
The Mantshwabisi 1000 (21-22 June 2012) will have a touring class! :ricky:

Quoted from the press release: "Touring class for dual-purpose or touring bikes of any engine size."

I have exchanged e-mails with Mr. Alan Reid and this is briefly how it will work:

"We have decided that tourers will only do one lap a day (Bronze 250 kms or Silver 500kms) and no need for a previous event

They will have to prove medical cover and buy a one day club licence."

Soooooooo....

Who's joining me?  :mwink: :mwink:

They will have to prove medical cover and buy a one day club licence."

Rough estimate of cost including food, accomodation, etc.??

Not including cost there and back (or beer).

I'm planning a Bots trip for end of May but it's still at that stage that it might not happen. If not then I'm keen on this one, touring class of course.

Entry fee is around R650 afaik. Haven't done an estimate for the rest but I reckon an additional R2k will be sufficient. Have a chat to Darksider or Hoofseun, they have both done the race in the past and might have a better idea. :thumleft:

Entries open 15 April 2012 and will be restricted to 200 entrants.

Go for it guys :thumleft: one of the best events in terms of organisation and riding terrain as far as I am concerned.

If all goes well, I will definately be going again this year.

Having been involved in a few (16) TDR races the advise that I can give: Get fit and get strong. You will have to pick your bike up 4 gazillion times in very thick sand, rocks and rivers (flowing if there has been good rains). MX type river crossings will also be the order of the day. Marshal points are 50 kms apart and there is always very little comms (incl cell phones) on the track.

A couple of years ago we had two riders on large dakar type bikes. Within the first hundred kays we cancelled their ride and showed them the easiest route off the track and back home on road as they kept falling off and held up the sweep vehicle too long.

Been there done that a few times.
Terrain is easy and very fast at places, 120km/h on 2spoor terrain. Sandy and alot of red dust, thick sand at places (heavy bikes...!!?). some sections with never ending hoops. And dont forget the 'wag-n-bietjie' bushes, they make you wag-n-Bietjie when they catch you!

Go and do it.  I'll be there but on the smaller Honda CRF 450 x this year if all works out.

There are some technical but nothing a rider cannot accomplish, lots of nice fast twee spoor and then this sandy sections between the trees where you get wacked and wacked, take sleeve covers with.

If you can fit mousses do so, easy to overshoot corners and end up in the puncture stuff, lube them well with mousse grease or rubber grease.

Fuel consumption very high, so need enough fuel.  We had problems filling up normal 25l plastic containers in Gabarone, not allowed.

Just pace yourself, the 250km's will go past quickly and be fit then you will enjoy it!

:thumleft: Thanks for the advice HS! Lucky enough to have a set of wheels with mousses, which I'll use.

I would say equal to Amageza in fun factor - but much harder work riding, in my experience.

My entry for Platinum is in.

Last year the two day race was 750kms and that got rather hard towards the end for me, I was quite a bit fitter and did a lot of cycling before the event. This year I did farkall and the race will be a 1000kms. So its gonna be interesting...

Have decided that I am not gonna be involved as an official this year (have done so for the last 16 years), but will go up and be a spectator... camping along the route in the bush.

:thumleft: :thumleft: Keep an eye out for a white Katoom (C249). I'm still the only entrant in this class, so I might be able to stop for a quick chat because I don't have to worry about finishing last in class! :imaposer:
