Title: Cloud 9 and the Hooggekraal river
Post by: letsgofishing on August 26, 2007, 08:17:18 pm
Thought I'd show you a bit of my immediate neighbourhood before watching the GP this afternoon! The trip was 68km and took just short of 2 hours.

This is our home and behind it you can the see the ridge (a very old sand dune actually)  - at the very left is Cloud 9 - a very large home with stupendous views.

Just after leaving Sedgefield and heading towards George, there's a turning to the left signposted Montmere - a small holiday resort on the eastern shore of Swartvlei. Here's a view looking NW across the vlei.

This is the road along the vlei.

This is the view from the top, next to Cloud 9, looking NW. Unfortunatley , the bush has grown a lot and you can't get as stunning a view as you used to.

We're now heading along the ridge in an easterly direction - this is the view down to "Outward Bound"  (on the point) - a team building/adventure training camp...

.... and this is the view E towards the Karatara river.

The road along the ridge.

A bit further along, this is the view S towards Gericke's Point...

... and a view of our home.

Then it's along the rest of the ridge which descends and comes out at the E side of Sedgefield. Then left onto the tar towards Knysna, take the first turn left at the Karatara sign and keep going until you reach this sign. (it's about 6km of tar all in all) and turn left. The road up to Barrington is closed at the moment, but if you're into some twisty tar with a few tight corners, this is a road not to be missed   >:D

The Karatara river looking downstream....

...and upstream.

Heading to the next turn-off - view S towards the ridge that we rode along earlier.

About 2 k's further, turn off left at the Hooggekraal sign. This is a view overlooking the river.

A view upriver...

...and down.

The road climbing along the river.

The view near to the top.

Then you reach this sign - left would take you on the 7 passes road to George, right to Knysna. We go right.

The road going towards Karatara.

A little while further, you'll see this sign - straight to Kysna, but for me it's left to go home. This road winds its way down to meet up with the road that takes us to the the Karartara turn-off. Then it's the tar back home.

Hope you enjoyed the ride!

Awesome !

You have an eye for a great photo !

Thanks for taking the time to stop and take photos for us to appreciate.

Lovely valley.

My cousin and her husband stays on a farm in Karatara. Could very well have been called Hobbiton...

lovely area... a few weeks ago I joined the Knysna Historical Society (Im exploring Knysna's history at the moment  :)) on an outing to Hoogekraal, we stopped and had a picnic and a talk at the Karatara river where gold was found in 1876 (I think) by Jack Hooper. Jack Hooper went on to build a beautiful homestead where the Lake Pleasant Hotel stand today, pity it has been altered so drastically.

It must've been a bugger pulling those ox wagons up all our passes a hundred + years ago.
