Title: AMAGESA 2012 The Ride Up and more
Post by: Andy660 on April 30, 2012, 05:42:19 pm
Many Thanks to Alex , WayneH and Leftless for inviting us ( Andy660 , Crossed-up and Buzzlightyear) as Marshall's to the Amagesa.
All our Expenses , Food , Accommodation and Fuel were  paid for.
And we had the privilege of riding on some of the most awesome private farm roads you can imagine.

Thanks very much guys  !

Ride Up :
Crossed-up and I left on Thursday morning with the plan of spending the night in the Tankwa then riding up Ganaga pass to Sutherland.

BUT FORGETTING about ALL the Bunny Huggers that were making their Yearly Trek to Stonehenge .

And it was raining on the R355 , most of the way.So  you can imagine how crap and muddy half of the road was , with a long que of cars , and 4x4 towing every trailer they could get their hands on.

We stopped for a cold one at the Tankwa store on the R355 then hit the road again,But Crossed-up took the Hitting the road literally , and had a tankslap at 90km/Hr and hit the deck, braking his fairing and twisting the rear subframe of his bike.
Luckily , he limped away withe a bruised knee.

We turned off on to the Tankwa road  and headed to our accommodation for the night.
Getting to our turn off wasnt too bad , but the road to our house was interesting with plenty of water on the road and lots of mud.

After getting to our destination , I collected some firewood to braai our meat , but the heavans opened up and put an end to the braai !And the Desert turned into a lake.

We managed to do our meat in a pan and after a couple of beers got some sleep.
In the morning we packed up and started back down the 5km road , which had turned ito a 5 km river.

After going through 2 small rivers over the road , we got to the Tankwa river , which is normally dry a a sandy crossing. But now looked like this :

I walked in about 20M and was already up to my knees , so we decided to rather go back down the Very Busy R355 , Take the Touwesriver turn off and hit the tar to Sutherland.
We got there at about 13h00 and after off loading our bikes , jumped straight into assisting Camelman and Wayneh with the scrutirneering.

After Scrutineering we were asked to head down to the Main Road in Sutherland where the SAP had blocked the road and the Gyro coperts had positioned them selves under the Monster Energy Banner for a photo shoot.

After the photo shoot , The Marshalls escourted the Gyrocopters down the road to the Petrol station to refuel for the next days riding as support.

Bikes and Gyrocopters refueling at the Sutherland Petrol Station.
Not something you see everyday !

Incedently , the Pilots of the GyroCopters flew them all the way down from Pretoria just for the Amagesa

+1000 :thumleft:

I had lots of fun, and now have a reason to do a tail tidy as well  ;D

BTW did you also almost get blown off the bike at Worcester today? The stretch from Touwsrivier to Du Toitskloof was not fun, must have been the strongest wind I have ever ridden in. I got home just before the rain started.

Sorry to hear about John but glad he is ok. Glad everyone is back in one piece.

Well done to you, Crossed - up , Buzzlightyear, Firecoast and all the okes behind the scenes who made things happen.. well done.

We got up at 04h00 in the morning , breakfast was from 04h30 and by 05h30, were on the road ,Trailing the Ambulance , Press crew and the Charlie and Delta control teams to be positioned at our stations for the Main event.
Riding in the dark down a dirt road isnt much fun  generally , and worse when you dont even know where you are going !

On returning home , we took the Onder karoo pad , thinking it might be a short cut to Ceres.
Well it did go to Ceres , eventually , not before it came to the crossing " left to Tankwa and straight to Oubergpas.

We took the Tankwa turn naturally.
And came to the opposite side of the river we were unable to cross on Friday morning.

Pic of the Tankwa River on Friday morning

Pic from the same position Today

And from the opposite side

There was a 1 metre wide "sllot" in the middle of the wash away , which must have been about 1 1/2 m deep on Friday.

Good thing we didnt cross it on Friday morning

Hi Andy

It was very nice meeting you, Crossed Up and Buzz Lightyear.

It was nice having some moral support from the three of you while I changed my puncture on the side of the road.  The critical commentary of my progress and technique as I did so was also appreciated

Thanks a lot for putting the time and effort to help make this a successful event  :thumleft:

But Crossed-up took the Hitting the road literally , and had a tankslap at 90km/Hr and hit the deck, braking his fairing and twisting the rear subframe of his bike.
Luckily , he limped away withe a bruised knee.

Hell I didnt realise Crossed Up fell quite badly the day before but still carried on and helped out.    I saw a broken front mudguard and heard him talking about an accident but didnt put two and two together.

I hope the damage isnt too great.

The R355 was a bit of a mess on Thursday.  I got into a massive tankslapper in the rutted mud at about 90kph.  Managed to hold on and brought the speed down a bit until I highsided at about 70.  The mud was quite soft for my landing but the bike took a bit of a beating.  So it goes.
I found it very disorientating.  When I got up it took me some time to be sure of which direction I'd been travelling in.

Another option is to restrict their size - edit your post and then in the opening [ img ] tags add a width parameter like 800, e.g. [ img width=800] (remove spaces)

I think it was deliberately done to get the detail in
