Post by: Gummi on May 10, 2012, 12:15:16 pm
As with any story told there are 2 sides to it, this is the KTM view, whilst Dirtrider tells the BMW side of the story, and experiences on the trip , I will try and tell the real story ....... :) , we will try and not duplicate any pics.....

(The planning for this ride  http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=94190.0)

So the trip of NAM started with these 3 idiots :

Day 1 - O f*k day

The plan was to leave at 2:30 in the morning, to make sure we get to Windhoek by 7 or 8 that evening.

Liam had some things to do and arrived home at 11 the night before. Between the 3 of us he had  done the least amount of planning and packing beforehand so he started to pack at around 12 that night ......

Luckily myself and Eswee loaded the bikes the previous day and finished our packing. At 3 am we had to call it and told Liam time is up , whats packed is packed and the rest he will just have to go without......

We officially hit the road at approximately 3:25 am, we were extremely nervous as the trailer were never tested to  that limit and  neither have we ever had to strap 3 Adventue Bikes onto 1 trailer either.

The immediate goal was the first speedbump in my estate, if we could make that we should be fine.

As soon as the trip started it ended, within 7 metres of my house (before the first speedbump), it was a loud "o f*k" by Liam which brought the car to a complete halt. He left his camera and GoPro behind and needed a cushion for the road. He ran back fetched it and we set on our way.

We made a brief stop at the nearest BP for Coffee and a Pie, and we were on our way
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_1494.jpg)

We travelled another 6km's when the next "o fok" came from the back - Liam just realised he left his grondseil or something like that at home, he eventually fell asleep and we made it to the border, once he woke up, the trend continued of him yelling "o f*k" every 15 minutes as he realised what he left behind .................

The border post was a breeze, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful , we were surprised, maybe they felt sorry for us as we were completely useless or something but it went smooth .............

SA/Botswana border post:

Once we entered Botswana we hit that damn Trans Kgalagadi Highway ................... I have never seen such a straight and boring road in my life, however it was ideal for towing the bikes there was no turns , bumps or anything on that road.....however neither is there any filling stations for miles, we ended up going into a small town called Kang to re fuel and continued....

Puma fuelling station in Kang
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_1506.jpg)

Apart from talking crap nothing much happened on day one, we eventually arrived at our destination and now the trip really started, we were welcomed by these bad boys,
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/Locals.jpg)

and boy are they smooth .............. we went to bed early as the next day the adventure would start .............

Day 2 - Windhoek to Sesriem - 380km - We are riding on the freeway .........

We woke up and it was piss cold in Windhoek, luckily we had no hangover, we immediately starting packing, we woke up at what we thought was 6:15 - see day 3

Packing was a massive task - Liam  (we always knew he would need special attention as he gets side tracked easily) could not stop complimenting everything he brought with and everything we bought .... his favourite line ....."Hierdie Rokstraps is moer cool......" it took him the longest to finish as he had to stick some clear vinyl on his bike as well - A bright idea we thought of to protect the bikes from scratches, which ended up working like a charm..........

We eventually got the bikes packed at around 11 am, and I was eager to get to our first destination as we had no idea exactly what waited on us....

We started looking for petrol and ended up meeting a few other riders at the petrol station, they had stories of flooded rivers, riverbeds and some of their mates quitting and going home, this scared us a bit, but who cares ......

We started driving out of town and eventually hit the gravel, (classic pic that everyone takes ones they leave the tar, one wheel on tar, other on gravel)

The roads in Namibia is truly amazing, this time we mainly traveled on a C road and it is in great condition, one has to remind ourselves not to travel too fast and try and stick to 100km/h max, but every no and then one does get a bit carried away.................

The song " we are riding on the freeway for some reason gets stuck and I start singing it to the boys ..... this scares me ....

There are some hidden sandy patches that does wake you up and is a bit scary, but all seemed to go smooth, we also take turns to race ahead and take pics, we go through a few small river crossings which is amazing....

At one specific river crossing I decide to turn around to take a pic of Liam, I did not notice the time and only realised later it was amateur hour. As I turn around I lost control of the Beast and she starts falling over, I try to hold her up but the Beast is too heavy, she falls to the ground, I am not impressed, pictures gets taken.

We pick up the Beast....

It did not take us too long to get a bit lost and myself and Eswee had to figure it out
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_1557.jpg)

At this point in time Liam got a bit side tracked.....and nature called
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/DSCN0273.jpg)

We eventually arrive at Sesriem, there is basically one garage, a lodge and camping site, we immediately have a beer, and another and one more, we start chatting to "Oom Willie" he runs the camp site and the garage, he informs us that we are not allowed into Sossusvlei with bikes anymore as people caused havoc there (we would later learn that some okes with Quads chased the Gemsbok / Oryx)

Our only option is to go in with the lodge, but it is fairly expensive,

Oom Willie then makes a plan and negotiates a deal on our behalf with the lodge and we get a special price..... Thanks again oom Willie .......we return the favour by supporting oom Willies shop, by buying most of his beers !!  ;D

We get to our camp site pack out our stuff and go for a quick swim

Bliksem die plek is mooi!!

Our campsite was amazing as well
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_1591.jpg)

During our brief stay at the garage , we met some other bikers, they did not book accommodation for the night and the camp site was full, so being the good guys that we are we said we can share our campsite

We then head of to the lodge to pay our fees for the next day , and the place is beautiful......

We get told that we must buy our permits the day before and the vehicle leaves at 6 : 15 sharp ......

We head back to camp , maak n braai en drink n paar biere , talk nonsnese with the other okes and off to bed ..... it was cold as hell!!

DAY 3 - Namibia Time - Rest day

So we were warned to be there 6:15 sharp , Eswee set his alarm for 5:30, at 6:01 we here someone screaming "Kom , ons is laat maak gou dis al na 6" ofcource he mistakenly hit the off instead of snooze and we overslept, we grab warm clothing put on a beany and run to the gas station.

I notice the gas station is still closed and I was sure oom Willie said he is open from 6 to 6 every day anycase we keep on running, as we get closer I get more suspicious. The  " o f*k's" start making an appearance as we run, we realise what we have left behind, but most of them we are happy until Eswee realises he left something important at the tent and he has to turn around, it is now after 6:15 and we are just looking to see if we can stop and stall the cruiser, as he runs back I ask him to just make sure what is the time........

We make it to the gas station and will stall the vehicle until Eswee comes back , but still no vehicle and the shop is still closed. Eswee comes strolling back  - the reality is that it is 5:15 Namibian time as Namibia is 1 hour behind us........Who knew..........

Oom Willie eventually opens the shop and we buy coffee and spend a hour waiting .....6:15 the truck shows up and we enter.........

Day 4 - Sesriem to Swakop via Solitare - 351km - "Boys will be boys" - the birth of Karools

The next day we set of quite early as we know we have a pretty easy but long road ahead of us. It is cloudy weather which is ideal for riding, we pack our bags, load our bikes and get reminded by Liam "hierdie rokstraps is moer cool, ek wens ons het nog gekoop". The bikes are packed and we are off.

The scenery is beautiful on the way to Solitare, especially with the weather we had:

We get a bit of rain on the way there, once we arrive there we realise why everyone recommended we stop there,
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/DSCN0520.jpg)

the locals are once again extremely friendly , we get to taste all the dishes which is truly amazing, we end up buying scones with some other stuff, and the owner/manager gives us some great blueberry jam and butter on the house, the coffee is great as well......

The amazing Blueberry jam
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_1782.jpg)

When the rain comes down the owner insists that we park our bikes in the restaurant ......

We have some time on our hands ....... and we see this sign .......... this pose pops to mind and once we meet Carlos in Brandberg (in a few days time) this became known as Karools

Later that day we travel to Swakop and of course we stop at Dune 7
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/DSCN0540.jpg)

Apparently you are not allowed to ride on it anymore, so we go on to Swakop itself....

Our plan : Buy supplies for the next couple of days as they will be rough .............

However, to do this one needs to plan properly, so we check into our accommodation and go find a spot where we can "plan" and maybe have something to eat...............

The planning start at a place on the waterfront, we test their Draft Beer (for ride report purposes only) and their Drafts are amazing. So in order to do our bit and to support the local economy we have a couple. We then decide to take a ride to identify the spot were we will  be making our purchases that we have planned, but again a quaint little pub appears.

To enable us to inform fellow Wilddogz and warn them of bad beer we decide to have a few Drafts there as well, at this point in time we are proud to let you guys know that Drafts in Swakop are all of a acceptable standard, so feel free to enjoy it on your next trip.

Whilst in little Germany our Little friend Jagermeister pops in and greats us at the same pub. This pub does not only put the Jagermeister in the freezer but even the shot glass, so we have to have some, and again truly amazing......

This continues until dark, we then feel the urge to eat our last decent meal before we go into the rough, so we find our way to the Tug restaurant also on the beach front. Still fully clothed in our bike ride kit, pants tucked in boots the works.........tThey welcome us and we have and amazing steak with a prawn and a piece of calamari, trying to make up for our appearance we order red wine, to show that we are sophisticated. For dessert we ask the locals were they go, and the send us to a local pub were you can "skiet Pool" in their words.

So we go, and start playing pool  badly etc. etc. and our other friend Brandy and Coke pops in to say hi...........

Unfortunately there is not many pic's of this evening as there were more important things to do.................This is the only pic that made it ...... the pub with the cold Jagermeister .......

The next day we will pay for our mistakes in a big way and the actual fun on the bikes starts

Mad Dog and Sandhond arrives on the scene the next day and we end up in the middle of nowhere.....

Day 5 - Swakop to Brandberg - 339 km - Road less travelled

The next moment we wake up and it is time to get going, we pack our stuff at an amazing speed and decide to try and make it to Hentiesbaai and do the shopping there. We go through a road block just before Henties, and event the cops are fairly friendly

It seems that we have forgotten what to buy (since our "planning session" the previous day) as we stroll around in a SPAR, eventually we buy stuff.......... we load the stuff on the bike and once again gets reminded on how amazing the rokstraps are.

We need to eat and we go into a local coffee shop,
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/PlanningHenties.jpg)

We ask the locals for directions and try and assess if the roads are accessible etc. Eswee starts talking the purest Afrikaans our ears have ever heard and we leave him to it.

We get onto the road.....

It is hard to say what road we actually travelled , but we tried to go straight towards Brandberg ..... we were suppose to travel on the pink route but i think we ended up taking something like the orange route.....

When going off the recognised roads the first few minutes are fairly stressful for some of us (not for Liam a.k.a. sandhond), you realise that you are on your own , it is impossible to capture the initial feeling, and neither could I capture the environment/escarpment on a camera. The only thin we did know for sure is that people don't come by often....

We find ourselves going through various types of environments, starting of with a black rocky area that turns into a red rock area, extremly dry places, not a plant to be seen
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/DSCN0556.jpg)

the only friendly face we saw was old Karools

There is truly nothing around

We eventually notice some of these legendary plants......

A bit later in the day ................ (now starting to get extremely hot) ........ we find this sign ................... again spirits are high and we make jokes of how desolate the place is ..............

Left or right ----- Moer Toe

We maybe should have taken it a bit more seriously ..........

Minutes later the landscape turns sandy and all of a sudden we are in fairly deep sand..............

I drop my bike first, luckily Eswee is close by and we pick my bike up quickly.........

From here on it starts going South ....... Liam earns his name sandhond by riding the sand like a local, he keeps his head up and keep it on the gas, from time to time he ends up way of course but he keeps on going....... i follow him and try and do some "smart riding" looking for patches of hard sand etc. etc. i manage but it is a slow process

Eswee starts suffering, he is at the back and is going slower and slower, fatigue is setting in and maybe the old Jagermeister is holding him back, he is sweating like a ....you know what

We keep on encouraging him to ride in the front, be he is not interested, he basically gets to a point where he cannot ride any further.... I put him in the shade of my bike (there is still no sight of a tree and give him water)

And I make him eat..... unfortunately this is all we had ........

Red Polony on buns
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_1839.jpg)

The oke is not well ................ he goes into the little cover of the veld .......... and he needs this ......

He returns and we need to rest..... he starts contemplating to just stay there, but it is not a option

We gather ourselves and continue on, ..... at this point in time everyone is tired to a certain degree, I still have no idea were we are heading and the brothers do what brothers do and start arguing a bit .......... all of a sudden the land opens up and there is hope.....

The next minute i make the mistake of going a bit to fast and hit some kind of mound with my back wheel, the bike basically flips over and I end up with only my front wheel on the ground whilst my back wheel is above my head ( a endo or a stoppie at speed) I brace myself for a big fall as my luggage hits me at the back of the head....... by some luck gravity pulls the back wheel down to earth and off I go................. big sigh .................. (my save of the trip)

Our happiness is short lived as the road turns sandy again, but this time I am in front and can take some pics, old sandhond was starting to fade on the sand and was all over the show, he was in the bushes and eventually ended up .....

Closer view

By now okes are tired, the GPS is of limited use , and so is its operator (sandhond) we take another rest. We go around another corner and behold ...................Brandberg in the distance ............

We still have hours of traveling to do........... but at least we know in which direction............

Eswee is extremely tired ......... we eventually join up with a main road again and head of in the direction of Uis

We still hit many sandy patches and light is fading fast, Eswee is beyond a point of caring and just stays on the gas, he flies past myself and sandhond, sitting on his bike as if its a low rider and just goes, we try and get the oke to respond but just goes.............................He earns the nickname Mad Dog................. only a mad dog will sit and keep on the gas in sandy areas ....... his riding position changes to a oke that should be on a chopper...............

He goes and we try to keep up.

Early evening we arrive at the White Lady Lodge at the foot Brandberg......... we are welcomed by the house pet Carlos (meerkat), and immediately me and him relate

Eswee was too tired to notice there was a meerkat even

We make our camp,
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/DSCN0603.jpg)

and go back to the main building to organise fire wood were we meet this German Tourist ..............

(Only later did we notice it was Liam a.k.a. Sandhond.......)

We make something to eat ....

We sleep ............... the next day we are of to Kumanjab

Day 6    Brandberg – Kamanjab   239 km – Oppikoppi and Giraffe – Moer Warm Dag

So after a well earned rest the next morning we woke up and wanted to make the oats we bought the previous day...........somehow it was missing, we still don’t know if some monkey stole it or whether some monkey left it at the Spar in Hentiesbaai...............

again the road was not too shabby.....

We set of for Kamanjab and a campsite called Oppikoppi, this was a easy day, since we had a tough one the previous this was going to be easy .......... we made up some good time up and until I had a front flat ..................................................

The patch came loose from our previous trip ..........but given our experience with pinching tubes etc. etc. we changed this thing in no time, plus we were fortunate enough to be close to a town so it did help to have some shade and a hammer or two ........................

It was a extremely hot day .............
We then decided to grab some food at a lodge, the wait was long and almost too long, obviously they make it fresh as the burger was really good ........ but what a wait.

Liam, waiting for food!!

Finally after waiting for an hour and eventually eating we were ready to hit the road ............... So we got our kit on including jackets etc. in this extreme heat, once we had our kit on................ Eswee had to go again ...............his stomach still not well...

Myself and Liam was not impressed..........

We proceded on to Oppikoppi, the owners as usual was very friendly and even assisted us and sorted out our washing........ we set up camp on a piece of cement and went to the pool for a “planning session”. The beers were beautiful ..............

Our camp......

The pool area

We felt that we deserved a good old dinner and myself and Eswee had some Giraffe, which was the special of the day ............, Sandhond/Liam for some reason objected profusely and told us we are disgusting etc. but then he went on to have a Schnitzel ......... not so sure how he justifies that ........

Liam was in the mood to drink ....... but we stood firm and retired to our tents............which was hard as hell ............ we also booked breakfast for the next morning as we "deserved it"

Pretty easy rest day all in all...........

Day 7    Kamanjab – Kunene Lodge   394km - Easy day - "Chicken or Fish"

We wake up and have a good old breakfast at Oppikoppi, today is going to be fairly easy, even though the distance might be a bit long the riding shouldn't be too bad......

We stop at a local spot to get fuel and a local "Oom" asks us about our route etc. he recommends we re-route a bit and go past Raucana Falls on the way to Kunene, he reckons the falls should be amazing ................... easy come easy go, we go via Raucana......

Some Scenery

After looking for Raucana for quite a while we eventually find it , you almost have to drive through the border post and then turn left and there you will find it, Liam and Eswee is too lazy to walk around in their kit, it is extremely hot and I am sweating like a pig but I make the effort to take these few pics form the other side.

Unfortunately the river was not flowing so the falls were dry, but still a pretty place, these rocks will make excellent riding for a enduro bike.....

We head off towards Kunene, the next minute I notice this ..............

Once again I left my ABS on, so it took me a while to stop and help poor old Mad dog......

I truly hate ABS on my bike ........... I wish it was never fitted

We eventually stop at a garage to have some well deserved lunch and fuel, as you can see even the goats needs fueling....

We have a "chicken" burger, but too be honest I have no idea what it was , it had the texture of fish and the taste of toilet paper with mayonnaise........ ugh.

Fishy chicken
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/DSCN0642.jpg)

We move on towards Kunene River Lodge

Once we get their we set up camp quite quickly, and start chatting to Pete the owner, he reckons the route for the next day should be interesting , it takes him 7 hours to complete Kunene to Epupa falls, it should be 97km's and he indicates we should just stay between the mountain and the river and then we will be ok. he looks at the rest of our route and said the rest should be easy once we have done the 97km's the next day ..........

The Kunene Camp is beautiful
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/DSCN0677.jpg)

Some other KTM riders arrive at Kunene, they camp across from us, we share a few stories, and they indicate they will be taking on the same pass tomorrow, so it should be interesting

We do notice that they are carrying much less weight than us, and a few comments are made on the amount of weight we are carrying ...........

That night we eat the toughest meat in Africa at our Braai with the usual
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/DSCN0698.jpg)

The other KTM riders dine in the restaurant in style.....

We confirm that we will be having breakfast the next morning before we depart .......

The next day will be the biggest day of this trip............. with a lot of rocks......... sand ........... etc. etc. Stay tuned....

Day 8     Kunene – Epupa   97km - D day...........

We wake up on Day 8, thinking this will just be another challenging day in the saddle, but Nam had a few surprises up her sleeve......

As arranged we have a slow breakfast first, knowing that we need to fuel up on energy , but this comes at a cost, we knew we would sacrifice the cold morning weather by having breakfast first and we would start the day in the heat.....

Slow breakfast
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_1976.jpg)

Eventually we head out, at around 10:00 am that morning .......... we were told the first 20km will be easy and then it will get interesting.......

In the first 20km's all goes well , it always takes old Mad dog a couple of minutes to get into a rhythm and at a particular downhill he looses his cool for a minute , but makes it down eventually .......
(with some encouraging words from his brother ......a.k.a. screaming at your brother)

We take in the awesome scenery as we go along .........

(This is the Kunene River ofcourse)

There is some sandy patches as well
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/DSCN0706.jpg)

Some more rocks
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/DSCN0711.jpg)

Some small river crossings
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/DSCN0713.jpg)

All in all, just some amazing scenery.......... then came the uphills............

(My number plate removed earlier by back wheel spewing rocks......)

Eswee takes a bit of a beating on the very first proper uphill, we also get caught by the other group and they briefly assist us in getting up, it goes fairly easy, we notice that some of their guys is also overheating...... but we all soldier on , we meet up with them a few hundred meters later again and everyone whom is suffering is being cooled down by their mates.......

A few more uphills and some more rocks and old Eswee is totally out of it, he is really suffering, overheating etc. etc. he gives us a scare at the next stop and we decide to take a proper long breather to allow for recovery, we spend about an hour on the side of the road , just relaxing, and keep on pouring water on the okes ............

We tackle a few more decent climbs fairly easily, however my beast is spewing out rocks like a Gatling gun, so it is not advisable to be behind me, the weight of fuel water, parts , food etc. is also taking its toll, I somehow get the feeling that the poor back tyre must be taking a beating .....................and the fan is running all the time, the heat and the work of the machine is taking its toll

At the heat of the day in the middle of an uphill I stall my bike and drop it , we pick it up and with my luck it will not start .................. Battery dead ,

It is around 14:00 and the sun is moering down on us, at this point in time a letter gets drafted to KTM telling them to cool down the damn bikes without draining the battery, a lot of swearing takes place!!

We eventually get poor old Eswee's bike next to mine to jump it, it is at this point in time that another long letter gets drafted to BMW telling them that they should fit the battery at and accessible spot on the bike .......... We have to take of all of his luggage to get to the battery (and yes we know some smart ass will tell us to run a cable , blah blah blah!!)

After 45 minutes the beast awakens and I take off, I need to keep the bike going at all cost, so I race ahead for about 5km's in the heat, the fan remains on giving the bike little time to recharge, once I see a river crossing I stop to close up everything first, I also wait for the boys, I start filling up water bottles to cool them down, I feel extremely guilty for the pain I put them through ..................

They arrive a few minutes later and both the letters to KTM and BMW is sent off.......

All of a sudden the locals appear from the bush and we take photo's - Eswee is too tired to take a photo......

Based on our calculations we should be over the worst and we continue............

At some point in time we see this old victim on the side of the road............

We soldier through quite a number of uphills and take a last long breather before taking on the last 25km's, this we know should go quick based on what we were told........

Always trying to keep cool

Whilst taking in the scenery

Sandhond urges me to go a bit faster to push the group to make sure we arrive before sunset, I oblige and I fly through the next 5km's at exactly 20km's to go  I get a flat!!!!!!!!!!

IMPACT puncture ...............Fark!!

At this point in time everyone is dehydrated , light is fading fast and we just want to get home .......... Myself and Eswee start changing the tyre , whilst Liam gets sidetracked and start talking about a caramel bar that melt in his bag, we blame his lack of coherency on dehydration, I ask him to fill my backpack full of water as I can feel I am not well.

We change the tyre at last and just before we fit it, we inflate it.................. only to find that we pinched the tube........... FAAARRRKKKK. We change the tube again, wasting precious water on the procedure.......... Liam/ Sandhond is still sidetracked. This time we do it slower and more cautiously as this is our last tube............

Done and dusted, fitted and perfectly inflate we head off...

For some reason we still get a few climbs eventhough we should be in the clear, we have a few small quick debates whether or not we are on the correct track as we see no other tracks from the other bikes..... but we still have mountains on our left and the river on our right.........

Some more uphills

At this point in time I try to drink from my backpack only to find old Sandhond forgot to fill mine............ bliksem!!

The beast takes a breather
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_2022.jpg)

12km's later we cross a large sandy patch , by know everyone is tired, and Eswee drops his bike and breaks his clutch lever...... patience is limited and we change that thing at the speed of light ............ everyone is drained , water is limited, no food etc. but at least we have only 8km's to go......

Clutch lever gone
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_2028.jpg)

We are all counting the last few km's and once we reach 96km's we start talking about the beers that we are gonna have etc. At 97km's we start looking for some sort of sign of some kind, at 98km's we are starting to doubt ourselves, at 103km's we realise we are in k*k.............

WE ARE LOST....................

We take out the GPS and try to orientate ourselves, and we realise we are way of course....... we can only see the general direction we should be heading in but the GPS cannot give us distance or anything as we are in the middle of nowhere.....

Light is limited and we all know the rule that one is not suppose to ride in the dark .................. We head of quickly, We give old Mad dog the chance to ride up front but with limited success...........

It is getting darker and darker and we still have no idea how much further to go, I keep on telling Mad dog it is not much further and he keeps on motivating for us just to stop, camp and sleep...... He rides cautiously as he knows there is no more parts ... clutch lever or tubes (ofcourse we can patch some tubes)

We keep on pushing and Mad dog wants to stop NOW!! It is dark and he wants to stop !! As I am about to admit defeat a 3 meter wide gravel road appears .............. and the GPS shows us our way home

21km's to go...........

We drive as slow as possible on the road , we know that this is the ideal time to make costly mistakes, most okes start relaxing and speeding up towards the end , but there is a lot of game on the road , we ride next to each other at 60km/h and once again start the conversation on the beers we are gonna have once we get to camp..........

Another letter gets sent to BMW for having the worst headlights in the world

A poor old rabbit runs across the road and Eswee rides over it ...... bunny killer

We make it to Epupa and pop into the first camp we see........ they are closed already but is willing to open the kitchen and makes a mean "russian and chips" for us, we buy a few cold drinks (no beers) and head off to bed,

Moeg!!

Get undressed
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_2031.jpg)

The owner must've felt sorry for us as they give us a half built bungalow on the waterfall and tell us to sleep there and then there is no need to still set up camp in the dark............ we go and have a shower, and off to bed ..................

What a day

The next day we will assess the damage.........

:laughing4: We also went left somewhere there as well - I think we follwed what looked like the natural road / path, but also realised a bit late that we were off course, we just carried on, as you; and ended up doing an extra 40kms or so. Just made those beers more desirable

I'm dead keen to read the rest ... back to work  ;D

You guys might have been lucky to get off course at point 045.
When I wanted to do that stretch from Epupa to Kunene in June last year, long sections of the road have been washed away from the floods.
No vehicle could pass that section for months.

Day 9 - 0 km - Epupa to Epupa - Tafel day

The next morning we woke up and made some pap in our half built house, as per our planning this was a rest day, just to chill and relax.

This was our view:

Our accommodation
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_2038.jpg)

We were so close to the falls that it actually kept us awake all night...... at a point in time I was looking for the remote just to put down the volume or switch it off......

We then went looking for the other KTM boys and found them at the place where we were suppose to stay, we shared some stories and had breakfast. We also ended up moving to the camp ............

Our campsite:

Showers
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_2167.jpg)

The plan for today was to fix the bikes (if needed, and just do some sight seeing)

The damage on the bikes were minimal

Eswee had a broken indicator and a few scratches
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_2074.jpg)

Liam - fork seal
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_2067.jpg)

Liam also burnt his luggage and then demonstrated his knitting skills.....

Fixed it
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_2105.jpg)

My back tyre was tired
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_2071.jpg)

We then went to the pool area to decide on the way forward, our old friend Tafel popped in as well...... and he just did not want to leave......

We had to mend a tube as we had no spare ones, and we had to plan
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_2156.jpg)

Planning 101
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_2129.jpg)

After many Tafels we realised we still have the same problem - we are in need of a back tyre for my bike, we need tubes for the front tyres.... as apparently some of the roads we are guaranteed a flat .......we do not have any spare clutch levers for the BMW's and we are going into some sandy sections from here on in..............and the reality is we will not make the rest of the trip with the fuel that we can carry..... the distances are just too far...........

So we had some more Tafels until they ran out......

The fuel problem was the biggest of them all, we knew we could beg for fuel along the way but this would just put a different spin on things..... plus the clutch situation bothered us a bit...... the other group had a back up vehicle and they offered to sort me out with a back tyre.................

What to do ... What to do......

Day 10 - doing the responsible thing +/- 400km................... Deep Sigh ...........

After much debate we realise it is not worth the risk to just ride into the Kaokoland knowing that you will run out of fuel and that you don't have sufficient parts and hoping that there would be someone passing by that will borrow you fuel and maybe can assist........ FAAAARRRKKK...........

We start packing our bags the next morning and reroute to Palmwag via Sesfontein...... there is a sad mood in the camp..... we keep on reminding ourselves of the tough day we had 2 days ago and the local indicating that if we can do the Kunene pass up Van Zyls down will be a breeze..... but it is not the same......

We take a long look at the permanent marker (Pen) we brought with to write our names on the rock at Van Zyls.....and shed a tear..... we say f' it and pack our bags and head off to Sesfontein..........

Before we make the gate , you hear "o f*k" over the blue tooth as Liam has forgotten something ..................

Eswee/Mad dog checks his oil and it is empty.............. we spend the next 2 hours looking for oil at the three campsites and eventually the one camp had some to spare ............. maybe a good thing we did not head into Kaokoland ........

We hit the road, the first few km's is very familiar since it is the road we drove in on a few nights ago when we got lost....

The plan for today is ..... make Sesfontein, have something to drink then head off to Palmwag, at Palmwag we should meet the other group and they promised to have 2 spare tubes for us on their backup vehicle............

We ended up leaving a bit late that morning so the heat attacks us...............

We stop at a local shop somewhere , buy some energades and some local gifts for the loved ones back home........

Not many pictures get taken that day , I assume as we all are a bit sad......

We eventually get to Sesfontein and meet up with the other groups' back up vehicle, seems they are still stuck in the mountains somewhere , we have a drink at the local resort (and only have this pic of it) and then we head off to Palmwag

We get to Palmwag a bit late at around 5 that evening........ unfortunately they are fully booked......ugh..........

As usual the friendly Namibians make a plan and give us a spot on the corner somewhere........ there are no shops and nothing to buy , we ask the local lady of the resort if we can buy some bread from the restaurant , she was not sure, but a old lady camping next to us hears this and shouts that she has a bread for us.............

We are hungry as hell , and we send Shameless/Sandhond/Liam over to collect. The sweet old Lady adopts us on the spot and reckons whatever we need we must just ask. She is even willing to give us a can of ham , but she cannot find it and immediately blames her husband for packing like his ass. Like any good old lady she then inquires what we do for a living and starts telling us about her grand children and what they have in common with us etc etc. Felt like we were in Matric again all over...........

We do the usual and this is our typical layout.............

We have a very slow evening.. and go to bed early and for the first time no beers...... the other group never arrives there either and later we would learn that they got stuck in the mountains.. and stayed over at sesfontein.

The idea for tomorrow is easy............... wake up early for a change........ leave early so we can see some animals and get to Spitskoppe ............. explore at Spitskoppe and have some beer for a change..............

We decide to leave Liam in charge of waking us up early !! we want to be on the road at sunrise , not a minute later.........

Title: Re: 3 Idiots take on NAM_KTM view
Post by: Gummi on May 31, 2012, 06:57:21 pm
Day 11 - Palmwag to spitskoppe - +/- 400km day - via Twyfelfontein, burnt mountain etc.

Liam wakes us up, it is time to pack and get going, as we arranged we want to get going as soon as the sun comes out ...... like a well oiled machine we start packing our bags, it is extremely dark so it goes a bit slower than expected , we make coffee on the gas stove , have some bread with Pilchards (Liam refuses to eat pilchards)

We are getting suspicious as there is no sign of the sun even and no one in camp is waking up either ......

Everything is packed up and we are ready to ride .........

We ask Liam whats the time..................... need I say more............

He messed it up!! and it is just after 4 am or something like that , faaaarkk

We all know the rule - don't ride in the dark - that applies normally to evening rides but hey we can rewrite the rules now - morning darkness is dark as well!!!

We are now huddled in the cold with all our bags packed and kitted but there is no sun or any sign of the sun even, it is  dark ..........He tries to avoid the situation by telling us how amazing those rok straps are ..........

Eventually the sun comes up and we are the first ones out, the gate of the camp site is not even open and we open it, but this is what we see on the way there.....

Gemsbokke all over

We continue for about 2km's and there is a gate in the road, our immediate thoughts are that it is so early that the town is not even open as yet  :)  .... however the local enforcement opens it, it was for the game .....

The whole morning we spot game all over, all kinds but it is hard to capture it on camera, at a point in time we come across a extremely sad sight ..................

It seems like the kudu either got hit by a car or got startled and fell and got hurt, it is in good shape but it cannot walk, we are overcome by a feeling of helplessness, we realise we have to kill it but we have absolutely nothing to our disposal, the only thing we do have between the 3 of us is a swiss army knife ...... now we do know that we are idiots but hey this is taking it too far, the Kudu is still extremely strong and we will be the ones tat will require a mercy killing if we get to close to it.

We wait a while hoping for a passing car or something , but nothing .........

We make a decision to go look for help and as soon as we see some house or local on the side of the road we will inform them so they can go and utilise it ..........

Not a good moment .........

We continue on to twyfelfontein , we eventually get to burnt mountain and the "pipes" but truly it is not wort the effort,

On the way there , the road is lekker though
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/DSCN0814-1.jpg)

The burnt mountains

We drive up to the famous resort and WOW!!! It is amazing, in the middle of nowhere just this beautiful place........... we have a coffee

Bushman drawings

On my way in I noticed that they had fuel, so I ask around and they send me to the local workshop. Everybody knows the rule - when you see fuel fill up no matter what !!

We go looking for the local and he eventually helps us

Eswee decides not to fuel .... Liam takes on some fuel to make payment easier as we have R100 notes with us. We drive all the way back on the road and continue to Uis .......

We eventually arrive at Uis (This is a big town in Nam terms - about 6 shops and 2 garages) and we have lunch at a local coffee shop, walk across the road to buy water as we are heading off to Spitzkoppe, where we are intending to stay in the community camp which has no water or anything .......

Some of us needs fuel so we drive to the garage, and ofcourse they don't have any fuel ...........no worries ... we drive to the next garage ............................... and they dont have any fuel either  ..........................AMAZING

Back to the coffee shop to find out when is the next delivery of fuel or what alternatives there are ...................

Again a friendly local helps us , but there are no options this time, all distances are too far and we are not driving back ........ no alternatives, no one to beg fuel from ..........

We make a informed decision to aim for Spitskoppe , maybe we can ask for fuel there .........

We should make Spitskoppe from there it is uncertain , but the KTM will continue on and bring back fuel ..........It is a awkward feeling when you plan to run out of fuel........................

The road to Spitskoppe is beautiful, the okes are nursing their bikes to keep wastage down , it doesn't bother me as my back tyre is now starting to disintegrate basically - keep in mind that I have traveled another 800km's by now since it was finished......

We arrive at Spitskoppe and boy o boy was it worth it .....

the local community welcomes us with open arms, we have a option, sleeping in a local "cabin" or camping, we check out the local "cabin" and it looks ok, so we take it. At R 150 per person or something like that, immediately we go to their tuck shop, they have 2 Cokes , 1 Sprite and 12 beers, I buy it all !!!

We go exploring and it is truly majestic !! Really really nice....

Some familiar faces pop in

Sandhond Jump

Hercules

Even Karools

We get back just before sunset and kill off the beers, now we are stuffed , the 2 staff member reckons they are done for the evening (its about 5 o'clock) and they do not think anyone will still come to camp, so they will lock us in the reserve basically , plus they have no catering to do as stock is sold out.

In true namibian style she ask if she can get us more beer ......... ;D   Of course we give her some money to bring us just a modest 6 beers and maybe some firewood, no on knows from where as there is nothing in the area, she disappears....

About an hour later and still nothing, so we shrug our shoulders and reckon it is fine, they got us , we are are used to it , it happens and maybe some South African taught her the hustle,

About another 30 minutes later a white bakkie comes driving into the resort ........ how is this possible it is locked, at the back is the lady , they drop off fire wood at our site and she hands us 3 of the coldest Quarts in the world ......... She tells us she could not find dumpies ....... immediately we regret not getting more .......... we give her the change and she does not comprehend , we say it is for the effort etc. , its a tip , but she keep on giving it back to us, eventually she says if we want to thank her we must just leave some meat behind or something to eat ............. How amazing are the Namibians... we still insist that she takes the money ............... and the next day we leave all our food that we had with us .

That night we have our beers, we have some whisky that Mad dog brought along and we sit around a fire surrounded by majestic rock under the African sky .................this is the life.......................

Day 12 - Spitskoppe to Windhoek +/- 400km's - Road less travelled!!

That morning we wake up with a bit of sadness, we are sad as the trip got cut a bit short due to logistical issues, we are really sad  that we are heading back to civilization ..................

To a certain extent I am also sad knowing that I will have to drive alone to the next town to get these bastards fuel, I will have to undo all my straps to load the fuel .......... UGH

That morning we strap on our luggage ......... and you guessed it .............Mr Rokstraps reminds us how amazing they are. Now for those of you who do not know what a Rokstrap is , it is purely a strap that holds stuff down and it can stretch a bit.....

Eswee has run out of batteries for his camera so I gave him mine, (want dis die tipe ou wat ek is). So the photos below is form Liams' camera........

We get to the gate of Spitskoppe and over the blue tooth I hear the first o f*k - Liam has once again forgotten to charge his bluetooth and camera ......... Ugh...........

So our plan for today was as follows: Drive as slow as possible to the next town and  fuel , according to us it was about 17km's away, but we were on fumes.............

We splutter along at a extremely slow rate............. and it is painful ............. eventually we hit a tar road as well and we head for the nearest town, we are all amazed that the BMW's are still going, but we know it will not last long, each and every car passes us on the way and even the odd donkey cart hoots at us as it passes us....... low and behold we see the Engen sign ................... is it possible .................. my beast roars and jumps into motion accelerating like a bastard, I drive up to the attendant and they have fuel - we made it - mini high five all round !!

We go and reward ourselves with a breakfast at a local spot as we have no more food since we left it for the locals at Spitskoppe, and we plan our route for the day ....

As usual , food is great and coffee good, and I even make a good old friend...........

But there is something wrong, there are already too many people around, we are not the only ones in the coffee shop - it is not like it used to be ......

It is a funny feeling, but we have been alone all the time with the odd interjection with other people but for a very limited time then we were all alone again ........... and it was good - now you start noticing other tourists , peoples rude comments, manors etc.

So we decide we must get a route home that ensures we do not see any other cars or people again for the day ......... we plot our route and off we go........

A few km's later we are not sure which off ramp to take but eventually we find our spot.......

Now keep in mind that since my tyre was "gaar" I have traveled another +/- 900km's and is about to travel another 300km's - That's the same as telling someone "listen your tyre is f"ed, but I just want you to drive to Cape Town from Joburg" So maybe not the sharpest thing to do, but hey , also I cant really brake too much as there is limited grip.....

Boy oh boy was this a worthwhile reroute ...........

As we get onto the route Liam gets stung by a bee/wasp or something in the neck....................... moer funny ........ he drops to the ground shouting like  a girl - unfortunately I have no camera

The rest of the road is amazing - there is no one on this route - we open gates between the farms etc etc. I will let the pics tell the rest of the story ..............

Moer mooi

It is just these massive uphills and twisty roads etc etc...(Adventure bikers dream)

Downhills etc.

We eventually get to the Windhoek District
(http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg567/gummi0071/IMG_2337.jpg)

And our trusty friend is their to greet us

We ride on - about 10 minutes later .........O f*k, from Eswee this time...... somehow he left his camelback (Water) somewhere - too bad boy !! It belongs to Namibia now ...........

Another few km's later we get the fright of our lives as we go around a corner and see another car  .... - he must be lost :)

A few kms later we stop for photo and I think this captures the moment...... sadness....

We eventually hit the tar road and head into Windhoek .................what a time we had ...........

We go the lodge were we left my vehicle 2 weeks ago with just a note on the dash , and it is still there....... we off load our stuff and head for the bar get some beers , sit by the pool and drink some ,

(Itchy and scratchy from the trip)

that night we will have dinner in the restaurant (awfull as it was french cut ribs - very fatty) and we will sleep one last time in our tents - on a piece of cement

.......... or well some of us would, I slept in my car that night ..........

Day 13 - We load the bikes

and head for Kang (Botswana)  it is 700km's on a donnerse straight road to Kang - we stop at a Shell to buy coffee and we feel claustrophobic - just too many people in  a Shell shop even ......... we have a way to go still to adapt to mankind....

That road was so boring ....................

Day 14 - we travel from Kang back to our loved ones in Pretoria. another 700km's

In Summary:

+/- 5 800 kms travelled
14 days away from home
11 days on the bikes
2 968kms on the bikes
Amazing adventure
Friends for life
Unforgettable

I went for a ride on my bike and ended up on a life changing adventure ............

Moments captured in time!

Hi all,

In total I got 2 968km out of the back tyre, I will try and take a picture of it , but it does not do it justice, it is basically a slick tyre in the middle with some nobblies on the sides......

The bluetooth we used are the INTERCOM SENA SMH10D-01B , it is the one that allowed for more than 2 people to connect, only once we connected them we realised that no more than 2 people can connect at a time which is a pitty as you need to basically phone each other the whole time and only 2 okes can talk to each other at a time, but it is still better than riding "alone" the whole time. It is nice to communicate and I recommend it highly

However when riding technical areas switch it off!!! Eswee made me nervous by just his heavy breathing over the thing and the odd "o f*k" etc.

Battery life was amazing on these units !!

With regards to the next trip I am in the process of planning it ................ I have a few ideas which I will bounce off the other 2 over a couple of beers, we will most probably get sidetracked and decide on something completely different .................but for now I suppose we need to do some work .......

Will post the awesome video a.s.a.p.

Namibia is a amazing place .............and I highly recommend it. I just wanted to go for a bike ride and was not too interested in Namibia, but I ended up falling in love with the place !!

Gummi howz about a bit of a budget breakdown if you dont mind and have such info available.

Yes, we have been trying to figure out the budget ourselves, the beer blurred some of the expenditures.......

In essence we each spent R 7 000 per person over the 14 day, but this included some spares still. So in summary, our budget looks something like this per day

Bike Trip                         Average Cost
Accommodation                     R 100.00    (Accommodation varied from R 60 p/p/n to a max of R 190 (Luxury room in windhoek)
Fuel per day                         R  175.00    (We did travel quite a bit and I think on average this should cover it)
Food                                   R    80.00    (Food is fairly cheap, we did not eat that bad, but buying for 3 helps)
Beer                                    R  100.00    (Beer cost between R 12 to R 15 along the way)
Average per day                    R  455.00
12 days                              R 5 460.00

Treats                                    R 800.00    This is the odd trip into Soususvlei and expensive dinners etc.

Total Budget                         R 6 260.00    per person

Car trip (trailer)
Fuel                                 R 3 500.00    (By far the biggest expense - 1 400km's x 2 pulling 3 adv bikes)
Road taxes tolls                 R    700.00
                                      R 4 200.00

Per person                            R 1 400.00

Total Per person                       R 7 660.00

Apart from the above we did have to spend some "capital" as we had nothing to start with, some essentials I would recommend:

Sena bluetooth system                                   R 1 250. per person ( a must , communication is awesome)
Sleeping bag                                                 R    100. anything more is unnecessary
Tent                                                            R    200. It was fine
Rock Straps                                                             R   175. Truly amazing ask Liam
Dry bag                                                            R ??? Cant remember , but it is really worthwhile
Oxford Soft Luggage                                        R 895 - I think - this is cool when you drop the bike in rough terrain
Tankbag a must!!!

Take tubes, learn how to repair tubes and change a tyre ........................a clutch lever in the sand did come in handy .......

We did come up with a complete packing list as well, with the help of the forum amongst other, I am happy to share it so let me know, however we did not really take everything on the list but it is fairly complete..............

sorry about the delay in the video, hopefully up soon ................ Liam got side tracked.............................

Dear Eswee, Gummi and Liam,
Many thanks for this very entertaining report...and the cherry on the cake...that clip of 8 & 1/2 minute.
I am a new dog in the pack; I am also new about off road riding. You have shown in simple way with great humour what adventure can be at his simplest.
I have "drank" your story (a french expression directly translated into English) and wish I will one day do a similar experience.
My only problem is my wife; since we know eachother (nearly 20 years), we are doing everything toggether as we are sharing the same passion...but suddently biking is not one of hers...and she became quite against it...
Nevermind, once again: Thank you for a baie lekker story.

Awesome report, and even more so, your trip looks to have been unforgetable. thanks for sharing. I am still amazed that the trip was so resonable in terms of cost. I would have thought it to be way more, but now I see its well withing my budget for such a trip as this! :deal:
