Title: CENTURIONís THREAD (Single bike and rider combination of 100,000 kms)
Post by: MellowJo on May 12, 2012, 12:37:39 am
OK, I have wanted to start this thread for a while. This thread is to read stories of bike & rider combinations that have done 100,000 kms together as a pair.
(about 3 x around the world according to wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_long-distance_motorcycle_riders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_long-distance_motorcycle_riders))

Please post or link your stories here. (Try to keep it short and to the point Ö..)   :deal:

I never expected to be so happy with my bike or the bike to be so dependable that I would ever get to this (centurion)-stage. Anyway, here is my story.

I was a biker earlier in life (see the list below), but family and finances kept me bikeless for a long time.
Me on a friendís PD Classic with my boet, his son and his father-in-law on the Vespa

In 2007 I got a three-year-late insurance payout, and jumped at the opportunity to buy a big adventure bike. Killroy (when still in Cape Town) actually introduced me to the 1150 and I was convinced that this was the bike for me.

I bought a Yellow 2000 BMW 1150 GS with 37,000 kms on the clock, and lost the rear seat in the demo run !!!  Not a good start to our relationship.
I just used the bike to commute on the road for a few months until I eventually ventured onto gravel. My first trip was a Sept 2007 MotoAdventure trip to Veldrift.

I was introduced to some fellow dogs by Ride-a-lot and Joyride and joined them on trips up the West Coast, to Middelpos and to Wupperthal.
I also attended the rainy 2007 Breede Bash where YellowFever planted his 1200 while trying to sneak away Ö.

2008 rides included:
Doornbaai   http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=14793.0
Middelpos    http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=15668.0
Wupperthal   http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=17490.0

In the middle of the 2008 winter, Highlander (aka YellowFever) put together a Baviaans-trip ....

http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=19505.0

After the Baviaans trip, on about 60,000 kms we went for little spin to Wellington for breakfast when a cloudburst broke over us. At about 80km/h, I did not see that the gravel changed to clay and next moment I was sliding on my back with old Pumba making summersaults next to me. After the fall, we had to push-start the beast and I rode on to Wellington for the breakfast. The bike was eventually written-off, but I managed to buy it back from the scrap yard with some bits and piece to fix it. Because the BM topbox was shattered, I also (temporarily) fitted a ďpizza delivery boxĒ for the next trip Ö..

After the rebuild, it was the Kalahari trip in October with a detour to Verneukpan on the way back. What an EPIC  trip ÖÖ http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=23724.0

Over 2008 December I did a short trip to Cape Agulhas and attended the next Breede Bash.

In 2009 it was Strandfontein    http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=29501.0

...and in April we went to Namibia !! My son Archangel also suddenly decided to get a bike (650 Funduro) and joined us. It was magic to have my whole family along for this trip. Namibia    http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=32003.0

After the Namibia trip I decided to fit an Adventure tank and did a bit of ďcutomisingĒ. Now I really had a unique and distinctive bike !!
http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=33834.0

Next was a Flower trip in August http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=36777.0

Ö. a Canola run in September and

Ö.. again an Agulhas trip in December, Archangel this time on his new KTM 950 !!

2010 kicked off with another EPIC, our Mozambique ďBike & Surf tripĒ but this time Archangel did the trip planning and navigation ÖÖ.
My bike tipped over the 100,000 km on the clock during this trip.

http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=48013.0

In June we did a Sutherland snow trip and a Groenrivier sand jolly Ö..
http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=56406.0

..... and a Swartland, Dasklippas trip ....

For 2011 we decided to do a Karoo trip which included Sutherland, Swartbergpas, Klaarstroom, the Hel and Warmwaterberg.
http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=69057.0

.... and in August for a Darling flower trip Ö.

For the 2011 Breede Bash, Archangel decided that we must take an alternative route. What a trip !!! We nearly wrote off both bikes on a route from Greyton to Villiersdorp through the mountains Ö.

2012 was a very busy year on the work front and so trips were less and shorter.
At the end of April, I went to see Archangel ride in the 2012 Amageza and so played around the Sutherland gravel roads.

In the first week in May the clock turned over to 137,000kms so completing 100,000 kms as a combination !!!

See you guys on the road !!!

Baie goeie idee, hierdie thread Meneer Kroes, baie goeie idee!

;D ;D ;D

One man, one bike, one ton - great idea - :thumleft:

I've god a mate (one crazy mf) who would take first prize on this fred, hands down. Unfortunately he's not a WD so he won't be posting. He's got an original 1980 R100; done Africa (as in bumming around for over 10 years - relying on his people and trading skills) in and around most of the African countries - 6 times over the years; with a bit of Europe and Eastern block thrown in for good measure. He reckons over a million kms - and he's still holding onto the bike. He revamped it last year - it looks like it's ready for a few more rounds. He was offered a replacement (any new one of his choice for his battle scarred bike) in Bavaria by the Tech Director of BMW some years back - he turned it down :imaposer:

Congrats MellowJo, it is a super nice feeling when you clock over the 100 000 km mark.

2 January 2011 I reached the same mile stone while on the return leg of a 14 day trip. Well the odometer finally registered 100 000 km even thou I was way over the mark already. ( problems with the speedo cable for about a year) By my reconning my bike has over 130 000kms to date.

I did 36k on my KLR and done 60k on my GSA thus far. Own other bikes way back, but only count d/s kms. So i'm due for 100k kms on d/s bikes soon, but have to wait another 40k kms to do it on the BM :thumleft:

Shows you what a bike can do with proper care and maintenance, even though it isn't in for a Sunday school picnic life under your hands.

http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=172612.0 (http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=172612.0)

And so in November 2015 , on a Karoo trip I hit the 180,000 km mark on the bike ......

This means that I am nearing 150,000 on this bike ....

A little later in the trip, I had a little incident, but we are still friends .....

Nice mile stone. I've done a few hundred thousand kilo's on bikes, but never keep any one bike long enough to get there. Most was about 70 000km on my previous AT.

The Pig and I are now at about 34 000km and I think we might get there one day.

Due to life and health issues (Back), my Peeg is only sitting at around 150,000km, but I do have 16 tax discs for the old girl, there were 2 or 3 in the holder when I got it.

I've had 3 bikes with which I did over 100 000km.
1979/80  Z1R mk2II  sold at around 120 000km
1983 GPz1100 (shown earlier in thread) bought at 32 000 sold at 152 000
2004 R1150GSA (still in use) bought at 36 000, currently a few km shy of 170 000
I rough estimate has me between 5 and 600 000km on 2 wheels .
I cannot imagine not being able to ride.

Bought my 1150 with 70000km on the clock - now at 236000km still as reliable as ever.
I estimate it has done about 100000km of that mileage on dirt.
Still fascinates me to see the front forks flexing on gravel roads at speed.
The bike is still pretty standard except for a 21 inch front wheel.
Engine is still untouched - even the throttle bodies.

Ran into this chap again on Monday.
I first met up with him about a year ago, and he showed me his clocks, the bike was on 320k kms.
On Monday he tells me he's now sitting at 350k. He's had the bike from new IIRC.
Still looks good too.
Makes mine feel like its not being used.

Just missed 100 000 on my KLR before they stole it, bike had 12k on it when I bought it and 3 years later it was on 105k using some oil  :deal:

My DL 1000 had 74000 Miles on it when I bought her she now has 196000 miles - Ok I did overhaul the motor 20k ago she is going better than ever

My KLE500 bought in August 2018 had 26 000km on and  this morning she clocked 40 000km

A little update on "Oupa" as this bike has now been renamed .......

Sidpitt organised a Karoo "Dads & Lads tour" earlier this year and Archangel needed a bike to join ..... so what could I do, I lent him my trusty old 1150
http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=238277.0

To distinguish it from my "new" 1150, we started to call this one "Oupa" and my "new" bike "Wittes" for obvious reasons ......

Anyway, so "Oupa" was returned to me this week, to allow me to experience this event ......

Still going as strong as ever ...... :ricky:
