Yes I know them

I have used them a few times with great satisfaction , last time being in late February this year when i sent an old Africa Twin from Cape Town to Auckland New Zealand

They know what they are doing - you can use them with no worries

I can confirm that there has been a management split and must retract my recommendation - please use somebody else

Sharp  :imaposer: Right in the beginning I also tried helping and steering them in the right direction. The 'fuck-em' attitude made me walk away and go have tee and scones at the Tannie's place.

A lot of people tried to help them ... Harold and Angie loved their little pity party and deliberately ignored repeated requests from the local authorities to get their shit sorted out ...but they chose to call their bluff ...and they lost ... and now they throw their arms up in the air and tell the world they are being persecuted

This saga has been going on for a number of years ...it's not as if they were given short notice before the bulldozers pulled in

Ask yourself this ...if this was your property, your livelihood and only source of income would you not do everything you could to safeguard it, including making sure your buildings were legal and you had approved plans ...and if they were not legal then surely you would do everything you could to get them legal and approved INSTEAD of ignoring local authorities, court rulings and basically giving everyone the middle finger

What did they expect would happen ?

The best way to aerate the petrol is to use a multi stage vacuum advance pump connected to double overhead battery terminals which must be positioned close to a high rise radiator cap

I am sure Flying Brick stock and sell the Great Basin roll top

2 months ago I bought the slightly smaller Coyote roll top from Flying Brick for R4899 ...it is awesome - I never owned any of the previous zip models because that is exactly what I did not like about them

I used this new roll top bag on my recent Kaokoland trip with Xpat and Straatkat and it worked brilliantly

After riding Martin's bike for less than a 100 metres up a tricky technical rocky climb just before VZP I could not believe how different it felt to mine ...but why ?

His bike was 25 mm lower than my bike ...and had been properly done by Hilton Hayward

Now 25 mm is not much at all you may think but it is enough to allow me to get both of my big toes on the ground at the same time ... and its amazing how much easier it makes life on the bike

As soon as I got home I had my bike done by Superfoxi here in Cape Town ...I also dialled in Martin's suspender settings .....and voila my 500 has been transformed into the lightest most comfy adventure bike I have ever had ...so much so that I can now sit for hours at a time with no discomfort

These bikes are super sensitive to tyre pressures and suspension settings ... a few clicks either way on the suspenders and a teeny bit more or less pressure in the tyres and they can turn from super comfy soak up everything in my path to jackhammer piledriving rattle false teeth out my mouth

Tim, who was/is well known for bike servicing PRIMARILY Honda & Jap 650 singles, has relocated from Waterkant Street to next door to us (Flying Brick), so he might be an option - will go and get his details now...

I once owned a BMW F650 Dakar - was probably the smoothest single cylinder bike ever (but also the heaviest with the worst suspension ever) - this bike had bar ends

While surfing the net one day I saw the Yamaha Dakar rally bikes had bar ends too.

I used to do quite a bit of cycling and all my bicycles had rubber inserts in the end of the handlebars to dampen vibration

My hands are not lekker and I suffer badly from carpal tunnel issues

This got me thinking ...

So while prepping my 525 for Amageza 2015 I got a set of BMW Dakar bar ends and chopped them down and modified them to fit on my 525

There was a noticeable difference in "buzz" through the bars into my hands, especially on long boring straight roads

So I kept those bar ends when I sold my 525 and fitted them to my 500 ... and it works for me ... it does not eliminate the buzz completely but it does reduce it substantially ... and they are as hard as fuck so they work very well in protecting the ends of the bars when you bliksem the bike down

I'm going to dip my oar in here

I have totally lost faith and given up on Tubliss - even though I have good experiences with this on Amageza

It is way too delicate for DS touring type riding and way too complicated and time wasting to try and fix in the bush

Since coming home from this trip I have junked the Tubliss in both wheels and reverted back to good old fashioned tubes ... but with a twist

I am now running heavy duty super thick enduro tubes inside a cut open old tube - total thickness for something to have to penetrate and puncture is 8 mm ...and the enduro tube is filled with self sealing slime

and as a backup I am carrying normal lightweight spare front and rear tubes

Straatkat used Michelin BIB mousses on this trip and had absolutely no problems whatsoever ...but he did nurse them constantly and never exceeded 100 kph - I can't do that - drives me insane to ride so slow

Only camping available (bring your own tent) at R365 per person including dinner and breakfast

I know it must be hidden somewhere in this thread but cannot find it for the life of me.

Please post some pictures of your "lightweight" toolkit for the 500 - what tyre levers and other bits do you carry with?

This is my toolkit

1 - Leatherman in pouch cable tied to left fork leg for quick easy access - I use this as a first resort

2 - Green canvas roll up with 3 spoon tyre levers (these are honestly the best and strongest and most user friendly levers - the blue handled Desert Fox levers are available on order at Flying Brick for R280 for the pair and come with rubber rim protectors). I have a 3rd lever because it makes fitting thick sidewalled tyres like MITAS C02 StoneKing and E09 Dakar easy. The wheel spanner is the original KTM 17/19/27/32 combo spanner with tyre lever - very strong and R145 from KTM Cape Town

3 - Black Kriega tool roll has

8mm ring and open spanner
10 mm ring and open spanner - for pinch bolts on fork legs and adjusting chain tension on swingarm
12 and 13 mm combo open spanner
Spark plug spanner
Reversible screwdriver
KTM T handle with various bits including very important T45 torx bit for subframe bolts

4 - Small BOSCH case super mini ratchet and socket set to get into really fiddly places ...including removing fuel injector from throttle body

I have every tool needed here to take off every single fastener on the bike and fix punctures - these all fit into a tailpack on rear fender and weigh 2 kgs in total

Danie, youre quite right. Everyone wants to get a degree these days, and there are much less tradesmen out there. Good ones anywhere. I see it a lot in mining.You can't find good fitters, turners, electricians, or mechanics. All kids seem to know these days is Economics (bullshit), IT or BComm. That doesn't help anyone.

If i was out of school today, knowing what I know now I would be doing a trade.

The reason why there is a lack of good tradesmen is because they are paid shit and generally treated like shit ...especially workshop mechanics working on cars and bikes ...then they leave these kak jobs and work for themselves ...only to find they know how to do the work but they often fall radically short at running a business ...and once again the customer is the one who feels like he has received unsatisfactory service

The motor trade in this country is generally an absolute dog show and there are seldom any winners ... vehicle repairs and maintenance are almost always a grudge buy ...nobody looks forward to spending lots of money on their car or bike service ...and when they do they expect to be treated like kings and be charged like charity

Healthy competition will and does improve the breed ...good service providers stay in business while bad ones go out of business

I fully agree

I have had a few big bikes ...the last one being a KTM 950 SE that I rode 50 000 km on in 5 years

There were many times and places that I was totally "overbiked" trying to wrestle with something that was 2 1/2 times my body weight ...and the SE is known as a relatively light big bike

Your pic shows a 660 Tenere vs 1200 Tenere ... even the 660 is big and heavy at a claimed 206 kg (http://motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/yamaha/yamaha_xt660_tenere%2014.htm)

I am now riding an "adventurised" KTM 500 ... a bike that starts out at a claimed wet weight of 114 kg (http://motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/ktm/ktm_500%20XC-W%2014.htm) ... I have added a 20 litre fuel tank (good for 400 km range) and a Giant Loop Coyote bag for my luggage and the bike is now at 130 kg fully fuelled and loaded for a trip

You have to ride a smaller bike on a long trip to believe it for yourself how much more fun and less tiring it is ...smaller really is better ... and I keep telling my wife that

What do you term a "logbook" ?

If you are referring to "papers" then what you need and want from the seller is the original CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION because you will need this to re-register the bike into your name

And you will need completed Notice of Change of Ownership Form and Application to Register and License Vehicle ... both attached here (together with your ID and proof of address not older than 90 days)
