Planning a Ride / Re: Harrismith to Piet Retief and back via Ermelo
« on: June 27, 2018, 12:08:54 pm »
If you take the road from Van Reenen (the same turnoff the high way that goes to the Green Lantern) and pick the roads across to Memel and on towards Piet Retief.  The leg between VR and Memel is excellent riding.  Very little in the way of traffic (some times the grass has grown almost completely across the road) and very scenic with lots of "mountains" and twists and views.

I havent been between Memel and Piet Retief, but i imagine if you stick close to the escarpment it would be lekker.

General Bike Related Banter / Re: Plastic Bike Which One?

a 450 4T is for big STRONG fit blokes.  If you are not that, but you still really want the big beast then just consider this scenario for a minute:

You and your maters who have been riding plastics for awhile (and you need them since they know where all the good riding is) are out in the deep bundu.  You are taking strain to keep up with them since they are fitter and more enduro experienced.  And then you realise you are only half way and you have to ride back to the trailer.   Now when you are totally FUBAR  you will wish you had something like a free ride...

I have seen this time and time again.  Especially with the 40+ age group.  So do yourself a massive favour and leave the 450 alone unless you are a real gym monkey that can do the iron man too.  Go with a 2 stroke and if you are on the heavy side go with a 300.

Last thing, DONT try buy a motor cross bike and use it for Enduro type riding.  That is fine for experienced guys, but typically turns out to be a miserable experience for the new entrants.
