BMW 650GS / Dakar / XChallenge Singles / F650GS clock resetting
« on: December 26, 2015, 10:28:05 am »
Howdy chaps....any idea on this little issue?
The little 650 has been standing for a while and the battery was just too flat to start the bike.....so I removed it and charged on external charger.
Reinstalled and bike starts and runs like a dream......but did some weird reason the clock on the instruments will not keep the time setting and resets to 00:00 each time the bike is started......

Any ideas....?

Aviation Board / BF109G ...............drool..............
« on: June 27, 2015, 10:18:26 am »
Here' s some really amazing video of Messerschmitt Bf 109G - Red 7 flying at BIGGIN HILL - a mere 8 miles from where we live.......... :thumleft: :thumleft:

The Bf 109 G series, or Gustav, were produced in numerous variants and most notably were given a more powerful Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine which produced 1,455 horsepower.
The Red Seven in this video is a G-4 variant. She was recently fitted with the original Benz engine, replacing the Merlin she had before. Built in 1950, she was one of the sanctioned Bf 109s built in Spain. Over the course of her life, she had some bad luck, belly landing several times, in one incident getting her entire nose ripped off. Luckily, someone always came and put in the time and money to get her back in the air. Although built as a Hispano (Spanish built version of the Bf 109), over the years she was restored and made into the G-4 version you see today.

A bit of advice.......... play this video FULLSCREEN and turn up the volume.............. apart from the sound of the engine..there's another little surprise waiting! :peepwall:

Clothing and Equipment / SENA & Leatt brace....?
« on: May 03, 2015, 08:30:15 am »
I've had the Sena 20S units for a while now and really love the system......but find that using my Leatt brace as well....causes a conflict!
In other words when the two are used at the same time...my head movement becomes restricted and I struggle to look left as the Sena ' s mount catches the brace.

I've installed the largest clips and changed the back support on the brace to lower is....it does give a bit more movement but Murphy ' s law says that the day I need to do a quick glance to the left...its going to get stuck ???

Any advice...?

New firmware released.............update via your SENA App... :thumleft:

http://www.sena.com/software/20s-firmware-v1-4/

10
don't know if that was the correct description to use.... but hopefully the pics will show what it is that I'm looking for...?

I discovered that the 12v Hella socket on the GSA was not working.......... found the plug that's part of the bike's wiring harnass/loom was broken in half ??? and not connecting....
If possible - rather than change the plug - I'd prefer to keep the wiring as original as possible.......... so wondered whether there's a chance anyone might have a plug spare - perhaps on a broken wiring section - someone that's modded the connection already - removing the plug...? Maybe a scrapped or accident damaged bike that has a connector...?

12
So whether you are refurbishing those worn grips or perhaps want to protect them from eventually getting worn and needing replacement..........

Cricket bat grips are a quick, easy and very cheap way of doing just this.

I bought some GM (Gunn & Moore) black replacement grip for the princely sum of R39.00 from a Sports shop - one grip will do both sides of the bike.

Cut them to size by measuring it on your handles......... and get two plastic bags, and a pair of scissors ready! :thumleft:

I watched this video - and used the exact same method on the bike..... worked so nice that I sommer did the GSA & the F650's grips....

https://www.youtube.com/v/gpnG8p2I_JU

And the finished grips of the bikes - took about 20minutes for the two bikes........... and the result was great - definitely more grip and the heater elements still work perfectly!
Minimal size increase of the grip diameter - but definitely better for me..

13
I wanted to build a set of frames for the little 650 I bought from a forum member.... there were two reasons - obviously for the luggage carrying capability, but also to offer a bit of protection to the rear-end in the case of the bike being put down on it's side (as my son did in the Cederberg) ....

( >:D also recently bought a manual pipe-bender and needed an excuse to use it)

Bought some 20mm tubing and then proceeded to sit on a crate looking at the bike and "designing" a concept in my mind........I'm not one for doing too many drawings until such time as I have a firm concept in my mind. The bike also lacked rear-footpegs - a good thing in my mind as firstly the bike's better with rider only and secondly - if my son did ride it - I wanted to be sure I could have a good excuse for him not to take a pillion on the bike!

.............. and then I just ... jumped in... cut a section of pipe and started bending - as soon as it looked workable - the second ring was made and the work started in earnest.

Being stuck in Napier - I was contemplating on just painting the bars with 2K ...but when wifey decided she needed to visit Cape Town for a day.......... I jumped on the chance and called Andre at POWDERCOATING WORLD in Montagu Gardens........... he said he'd "Make - a - Plan" .....and that he did... I dropped the bars at 11am and collected them fully finished by 3pm . THAT'S what you call service!

Please excuse the pics and don't mention the welding

in the fourth pic - I decided to add an additional cross bar - just another fastening point for the soft luggage and more protection from the silencer cans....

General Technical / Where can I get these LED Foglamp bulbs...?
« on: March 14, 2015, 08:39:06 am »
I'm trying to get hold of some "881" replacement bulbs for my Hyundai Tucson's front fog lamps.

Agents = R185.00 per bulb.... but no stock ???

Found a Japanese version which lasted 3 days and popped (only the one side that had the new bulb put in..)

So I checked on Fleabay - there's quite a few available - but most of those companies won't post to RSA - :xxbah: wonder why...........? (oh yeah - the stuff gets nicked and they are always striking there.......)

Anyone know of a SA reseller - failing that I'll order from eBay and have sent to UK friends to bring...

Been searching all over and it seems that short of buying one of these little bikes.... the only rentals available are for scooters...?

So .... any Wilddogs in the Cape area that would consider loaning/renting one of these to me for a long weekend...?

My wife and a good friend of ours did the bike training with Billy de Beer on the TW200's ............ now I have a F650GS that is waiting for them to ride... but they feel intimidated. So I want to do some very easy training here in Napier on the back roads to prepare them for the GS.......

if anyone is able to assist or make a suggestion - would be really appreciated. All costs would be covered....

PM me please or sms to 082 410 (one) 5 (nine) zero

BMW 650GS / Dakar / XChallenge Singles / F650GS left switchgear
« on: November 21, 2014, 07:30:28 am »
The F650GS we bought from Dipstick has been going like a bomb and passed it's roadworthy yesterday with flying colours......... well except the testing officer's mention that one of the switches were missing.........? :-\

We never noticed it at all......... but it seems it's been gone for a while........ so hoping to repair/replace if at all possible?

Any advice or if someone has one of these elusive little items that could be parted with?

Clothing and Equipment / My boy's boots are FUBAR..........
« on: November 19, 2014, 09:08:27 am »
A while back I bought a set of boots from a forum member and had them resoled in the Cape for my son!

He'd never used them before - but this past weekend was his baptism of fire on the F650 in the Cederberg.

The boots were not abused and never took a beating.... however what I noticed is that the casing or outer shell of the boots are brittle and collapsed totally! These have not been abused or left outside at all.......... just seems the one fall he had allowed the boots to disintegrate.

The soles are still NEW!!!!!!!!!! ??? ???

So - I'm looking for a spare pair of Size 9's that someone could perhaps part with........... I'm hoping the soles can be removed and re-used on other boots - they cost R440 to replace :eek7:

anyone else see this happen...?

Ride Reports / Cederberg Oasis and the ride with my son!
« on: November 18, 2014, 08:10:23 am »
CEDERBERG OASIS WITH MY SON DIRK – FIRST TIME TOGETHER – HIS FIRST TIME ON DIRT!

I have to start this RR with special mention and thanks to those that assisted and allowed this to be possible at all!

I bought this little BMW F650GS from Dipstick on the forum while still in the UK earlier this year and with the amazing help of Kykdaar & Groenie, they checked out and did a phenomenal report for me on the bike.
Kykdaar went out of his way to collect the bike for me – store it and get it sorted for the trip down to Napier with the bike couriers.

Buttslider in Mosselbay went out of his way to organise a set of Crashbars for the bike and even arranged and paid for the courier to get the bars to us......... “ above & beyond” mate...........

A huge & massive thanks to those chaps that helped in the true Wilddog spirit........ your names are in my “little black book” and to return the favour will be my mission.......!

The little 650 arrived and we were super chuffed to get it here.

A very capable little bike that will be used to train my wife and a few friends as well.

Space was made next to the GSA for the new addition to the family...... nogal a carpeted bay too!

Crashbars that arrived had to be fitted...............

..... before

........... after

When Chantal posted that the Spitbraai Event at the CEDERBERG OASIS will be held on the weekend of 15th November......... planning immediately started on my side – to find a way to get my son involved and to do a long-overdue trip with him.

A couple of issues were to be sorted... all minor really – but I suppose the most important would in fact be to get hold of a bike that he could ride!
ATGATT was almost sorted – so I bought a set of old size 9 boots from another WD had them re-soled.

Once I told Dirk about the planned trip – he became really excited, but a bit apprehensive as to when, where & how this was all to take place.

So last week Thursday – he arrived in Napier and we started prepping the bikes & luggage. The excitement was there and we planned to leave very early Saturday morning from here to meet up with mates riding from Cape Town .... somewhere near Ceres.

The weather forecast for Friday & Saturday for the Overberg was really hectic....... in fact temps for the Cederberg was indicated to drop down to 2 or 4degrees and we sort of eyeballed each other with the unspoken, silent knowing that cancelling the trip might be a very big possibility! :-[

75km/hr winds were forecast ............... cold & rain........... miserable indeed.............. :eek7:

Friday morning we had some work to do and after a trip to Bredasdorp....... we arrived home at around 1pm and noticed the wind was starting to pick up.

I could see Dirk’s dismay at the very real possibility that we might have to cancel or postpone the ride out............. however I told him to pack up and that we’d just do it – sooner rather than later.

The man was packed and ready – dressed up within 20minutes! :imaposer:

Hehe – keen was not the way to describe his enthusiasm........... and after explaining to the wife what we intended on doing...... we eventually got on the road just after 2:30pm.......... stopping just outside Napier for the first few pics......

Could not even get him off the bike..........

First selfie of the trip!

All I can say ...........is that it was flippen cold and the wind – oh goodness.......... the flippen wind was hectic.

We struggled severely as the wind battered us from the left side. Keeping the bikes under control was definitely a test to our endurance and I think it was only the mental smell and taste of Chantal’s cooking, veggies and Gerrit’s delicious lamb that kept us going!

We had a few smatterings of rain drops.. but fortunately missed any rain and only had a break from the wind after we left the tar and hit the dirt for the final leg to the Oasis.

Taking pics or the ride up until we hit the Cederberg – was not an option as we hoofed it to our destination. Light fading... we made it and I got the constant exclamations of wonder from Dirk through the headset............ to say he was amazed and excited was a total understatement!!

Dirk’s first view of the Oasis.............

The bad weather necessitated wearing the Fluoro vests........which also helped as a wind break....... although Heimer was very quick to remind us we were still wearing them when we arrived at our destination! :deal:

OASIS murals ........

....... weather on it’s way............

The warmth of the fire inside as well as the company was really fantastic........... unfortunately I cannot remember all the names - but would make special mention of John & Tania (they were there in their 4x4) and their bottles of Tequila that seemed to flow endlessly.........and we were glad to see Rudi arrive on his KTM - albeit totally drenched. He's been caught by the weather we just narrowly managed to escape from.

The evening wound down and our 350km windswept trip took it's toll as we staggered off to bed for what promised to be a really good night's sleep......... THANKS CHANTAL - that bed, mattress, duvet and soft cushions were just what the doctor ordered.... :thumleft:

Saturday's update to follow........ :thumleft:
