A KTM and a PIG on the Rock
« on: February 03, 2008, 11:39:26 pm »
Saturday morning arrived and Popipants and myself had decided that the rock was worth a revisit since his new PIG and my KTM had not yet seen the top of the rock‚?¶

Met at the Wimpy other side the dam wall and headed out on the 1st canal out towards the rock. Interestingly some sections of canal 1 have been blocked off by serious barbed wire fences with warning signs of no entry all over them.

We were navigating on my memory, so we probably took a few wrong turns but eventually made it to the town by the rock at about 10h00 where we decided to have a beer at the local shabeen before going up the rock. Well what service we received as plastic chairs were brought around in a hurry for us to sit on while enjoying our beers in the shade of the tree.

After the beer, we made our way up the rock with no mishaps only to find 6 4x4‚??s at the top.

These guys had all come up the middle route. After chatting with the guys for a short while and seeing quite a bit of oil spots lying around from them, the guys in the Land Cruiser decides to show everyone how to do it up the steep section‚?¶

A few pics of him going up and then back down again on the steep section. Low range and 4x4 helps a lot.

Just some pics of my baby and Popi‚??s new 1150 Adv at the top of the rock, man it is a beautiful view from up there but it gets damn hot very quickly.

Isn‚??t she Beautiful!!

It was getting very hot so we made a beeline straight back to the shabeen for some more refreshments. Again the service was good and we did not even have to go into the bar to fetch our beers, they were brought out to us under the trees.

From here it was a quick ride back to Harties for some lunch and beer at o‚??Hagens then home on tar.

Thanks for the ride Popipants, good as usual.

This is the first pictures posted, that shows the steepness of the Rock.

That was the aim of standing half way up and taking them at a level, most of it is actually ok, but the first section at the bottom is the scary part and the transition from flat ground to rock is the problem..

It looks like you had a good time.  One day I'll have to see if that service is as good as you claim.  ;D

Allways a great view from the top of "Da Rock"  ;) I wonder how many bikers have damaged their bikes going up the front route. Found some BMW HP2 broken parts one day at the bottom. Story goes that the bike was so badly damaged they had to fetch it with a trailer. :o

Nice pics Funacide

Pity the weekend is only 2 days long - just too much to do
I suppose there is always a next time !!!
I used to be indecisive, but I'm not so sure anymore

Good pics to show how steep the first bit is.
In the 2nd pic of the cruiser you can see it just on the steepest part, approaching the lip.
If you drop it after the lip , you can generally hold on and not have your bike ground up.

Also when its going down , see it drop off the lip.

That lip is less than 10m high.
Maybe 2 stories.

I have seen about a 50/50 success rate there.

Nice report, we were only minutes behind you guys, wanted to take the guys to see the Rock, but I think the stomach rumbles got the better of us, Slainche it is in the middle of knowhere in a rural village, trust me I dont even think they have electricity never mind telephones.
I think if I actually found My mind, I probably wouldn't know what to do with it,
