F 650 - is this a good buy?

One of SWAMBO's colleagues is selling his 2000 BMW F650. He's asking for R25,000 (now R16,000). Any advice on whether it's a good deal or not would be appreciated. I'm looking for a commuter and weekend toy.

I'm told it's just had a major service. If it makes a difference, I'm a big guy, 6'2" and fighting weight around 115kgs.

Edit: Forgot to add, it's got around 48,000kms on the clock.

Maybe the photo but it looks a bit tired for 25k IMO. Mileage? I'd personally rather look at something like a KLE for that price range

for 30k you can get the much newer f650gs gs that is fuel injected etc

have you sat on the bike? you will find it is designed for shorter people. I modified my seat and added a blow up cushion aswell to cater for the height. I am about 6'1 . we should be riding a Dakar.

As the other guys have mentioned, you should be on a higher bike, that beemer will cause a lot of fatigue pretty quickly.

I agree, and they are available. I am 1.93m tall and I find the Dakar I currently ride very comfortable.

For a well maintained Funduro, I will pay between R 20 000 - R 24 -000, but not over that.

I used one to commute 100km per day for two years.

I am 6'1 and yes, the bike is quite small, but I cannot say that it was uncomfortable. Yes a Dakar would have been better.

My son, also 6'1, now uses it.

It is a nice bike with enough power to get you out of a spot but not enough to tempt you too much on the freeway.

Because it is older technology, carbs, no fancy computer systems etc, you can have it serviced just about anywhere.

If you look around a bit, you are likely to get something better for the price.

Thanks okes, I think I'll keep my eye out for something better then. Not in a rush to buy anything, just looking to reduce the mileage I'm putting onto my Defender 130, which is also not the ideal towncar.

Hoping a KLR or similar will turn up at a ridiculously low price.

Just need to stop SWAMBO spending the cash on the house in the interim.

Have a look at this one Imvubu, a bit higher, so more comfy. And the engine is also pretty bullet-proof, much like a Defender

If its in good nick then it may be a good buy...

Funduros are very good & reliable bikes. But for the one the photo I'll pay not a cent more than R 18 000.

The little Beemers do come around from time to time for around R 25 000, and if well maintained, they can be superb bikes to own.

On another thread there is a very neat Honda Dominator 650 for sale, which is basically an XR650L with a comfy seat and larger fuel tank. It will do the same job as this Funduro, and in the right hands, it may even have an edge off-road.  Also a good buy in your budget figure

Mmmm...price dropped to 16K. Do I go for it or not. Will be used to commute, literally 2,5kms from home to the office and back. PK to the first oke that tells to walk or get a bicycle.

i had one, mine was immaculate and i sold it to weskuskoos......In my opinion you cant break them but i think the 20+ price range is steep for THAT one..

At that price I'd go for it. Worst case scenario you could get about that if you broke it for spares...
