R1200GS - 77kW vs 81kW
« on: August 08, 2015, 02:10:19 pm »
I'm a newbie, and about to buy my first bike - a R1200GS.

I've seen a bike that I like a lot - it's a  lovely low-kilometre early 2010 model with 77kW.  I know the bikes were upgraded later in 2010 to 81kW.  Should I have any reservations (in terms of reliability and resale value) about buying the 77kW as opposed to the (slightly more expensive) 81kW versions?

The 77kw bike is probably a late 2009 registered early 2010.  The big difference between the two:

-  77kw = Single cam versus 81kw double cam
-  81kw = Smoother gearbox

The rest is pretty much identical.

My previous bike was one of the 2009 (77kw) bikes.  It ran problem free till I traded it in on 108000 odd km.  My wife's previous bike was also such a 2009 (77kw) GS.  She traded that in on 107000 odd km.  Ran problem free except for a drive shaft boot that perished.  In general, I see no difference between the 77kw and 81kw bikes in terms of trade in value later, nor reliability.  I would happily buy either.

I had both , a 2006 Gs and a 2012 GSA .

The dohc is more responsive and yes , the gearbox is a a little bit more smooth.

But the difference is not much ...... If you get a good deal on an earlier model ..... Take it   :thumleft:
