So after my first attempt http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=190646.0 I decided that I now have the confidence to tackle this bigger project.
Everybody in South Africa will only help you with a sidecar if it is fitted to a GS or a Ural it seems like.
But the funny thing is that once you start to post info on your build, you will have all the EXPERTS in the world chipping in.

That's fine, but I am forced to do it alone and I will do it MY WAY

So I had this idea to build a sidecar looking like a Land Rover and have a sticker on the back saying : "THANK GOODNES a YAMAHA CAME ALONG TO GET ME HOME"

But making a sidecar TUB from scratch is no easy task.

So when Keith started his new sidecar project, I decided to contact him and try and get one of his sidecar bodies as I like his shape.
I contacted the man and we made a deal....just a tub, I will do my own engineering.

I paid him a 50% deposito and less than 4 weeks later he phones me up to come and fetch my new tub.

I got into my old Vaal Japie tractor (Toyota Condor 3D 4x4) and went to fetch it in Swellendam where the tubs are produced by a professional boat building company.

It has now being a few months where I started to gather parts and forming ideas on how to put it all together.
As an electronics technologist I have no Engineering background, but thanks to Mr Google and some common sense, I am sure I will get there.
This will be a on / off-road rig where the off-road will be gravel highways and some 2 spoor but not heavy plastic/KTM off-road conditions.

I managed to get a 2nd hand 15 inch mag wheel for a good price. Had some scratched on it and a missing middle plastic cover.
But the price was right and I got stuck into it with my power file and removed the lip where the plastic cover was supposed to be fitted.
Then I painted it Satin Black for now.
I might take it in for bead blasting and powder coat later.

While I was busy on the Honda sidecar I managed to get the wheel bearing, disk and caliper sourced.
Now it was time to get it to fit on the frame.
Luckily I have my laser cutter and I drew up some flanges to fit everything together.
I used 3mm supawood and tested the fit.
All seems to be fitting together nicely so I send the DXF files over to the laser cutters. Should be done by the end of the week or early next week.

Had a lekker rustige drive down to Swellendam...Rustig because the Condor is no F-1 racer.
Passing Ladismith I saw the snow on the mountains and was thinking of the poor chaps that HAD to attend the Thumper Bash.

Took me about 15 hours to get to Swellendam where I met Keith.
Slept like a baby.

Next morning we were up early. Had some coffee and a lekker chat and then went off to the boat builders.
There Keith had to fit the back carrier / table the front bulbar and the screen.

Took a while to do it correctly. So my plan to turn and burn was not to be.
I really thought I could load up, get back on the road and try and surprise the KZB Bash chaps, but it just was not possible anymore.
So we went to town to have a bit to eat before I hit the road.

I had no Idea where to find sleeping place for the night. So I hit the road and let it be a surprise.
Suddenly around 16h30 I saw the turnoff to Buffelsbaai.

Made a sharp right turn and found the most beautiful caravan park ON THE SEA... just like I like it.
Went to the shop... no beer, no wine, so a bottle of Ginger Ale a old braaipack from last December, a packet of Simba chips and some buns had to do for the night.

But it was worth it...just being next to the sea having a braai by myself.

Next morning early I packed up my tent and hit the road.
Went past Louis and Nannie in Kin Williamstown to pick up my ZERO Fridge that he donated to me.
Then off to East London to go and say hello to my fellow BSA Bantam bike builder and eventually to my colleague where he treated me to a lekker braai and a warm bed.

Next morning 05h00 I was on the road. Only 995 km to go.

Got home without a problem....3222 km to pick up a sidecar...madness... no LEKKER !!!!!

With a holiday on the 9th of August, I decided to get stuck into it.
I tried my 6 foot frame and fitted well into the sidecar. Ample leg room and the feeling was GOOD.
Constructed a wooden dolly so that I can determine the height and position of the car to the bike.
Will have about 300 mm ground clearance under the sidecar if all works out.

I plan to do a SEMI leaner.... meaning that the sidecar is not fixed solidly to the bike.
The idea is to use the center of the bike as a pivot so that the bike can still be ridden like a NORMAL bike and one does not have to modify the rake of the front wheels to give better handling. I will also try and have 2 struts that can be attached during sand or mud riding so that the rig becomes a SOLID entity.

During this SOLID riding time one will then have to steer the rig with the handle bars.
99,9% of other riding the bike could LEAN and be ridden around corners like a normal bike.
I will not have full leaning capability and the sidecar will have to be so far away from the bike that the whole outfit becomes to wide to run on the road. But by experiments show that under NORMAL road riding the bike only leans a few degrees so it should not be a problem.
This is not a F-1 racing car, so I will go around corners a bit slower than normal.

I managed to find a damaged Rumbux crass bar from my local Yamaha dealer.
I welded a 5mm thick steel plate at the bottom.
Then a 8mm flat bar onto this.
I took this flat bar to the TOP frame mounting in the front.
Will still attach the back to the center stand points.
From the front and the back I will then attach my 2 main beams to the sidecar.

The Rumbux belly plate does not sit SQUARE to the bike.
To have my flat bar in the center, I used the 32mm round pipe that I will be constructing my frame from along the front and back wheel to get the CENTER of the bottom plate.

Happy so far.

Must say, my new inverter / mig welder is real pleasure to put this thing together. Wilth my old oil bath welder I would not trust it.

I can't wait to see the end product.

I see that you camped at Umshanti at Swellendam. It is very beautiful there. We are going to the River Run Rally that will be hosted there 2-4 September. Looking forward to it.

Nee Gerard, had a look at it...too complicated with a chain and sprocket system and a single wheel in the middle of the sidecar.
Found a German site with some pictures on this CENTER LINE idea.

Will work out the unknown myself
