DIY Garmin eTrex Cradle
« on: January 29, 2017, 10:40:53 am »
I already have one of those billet cradles for my eTrex, however, I want to run a 2nd eTrex for the Baja, as I'm in the lites class.  So, rather than buying one of those moerova expensive cradles, I made this quick and dirty one of Kydex.  Took about 10 minutes.  Looks like it will also transfer less shock to the GPS.

I get it from eBay, about R50-60 for a A4 2mm sheet.  I normally buy about 4 sheets with free shipping, that's the sweet spot. I'm sure plastic suppliers should have it (Maycies [spelling]).

I'll use them in the future.  Not having to wait 6 weeks is worth R40.  Thanks for the link

So, how do you join this stuff to itself, and would it be petrol-proof? Thinking fuel tanks & stuff?

Not glueable to the best of my knowledge.  Most people use mechanical fasteners to make holsters and the such.

Wont you be able to plastic weld the ends together, basically just melting and fusing, like HDPE?

Weetie waar jy dit gaan kry in RSA

Adie

Sal 'n nuwe thread begin.

Cheers!

Thanks, I genuinely think that the plastic versions transmit less shock to the GPSs than the billet metal ones.  My Kydex job not only survived the heat of the West Coast Baja, the eTrex 10 inside it did not shut down at any point.  Result.

How did you attach it to the bike BtB?

It was mounted on a piece of of HDPE cut from an old swimming pool sand filter.  The strip was bent with a heat gun and bolted to the handlebar cross bar.  Pooratech to the extreme.
