R80 gs rebuild
« on: February 15, 2017, 02:25:25 pm »
Well this has been some time coming!
Bought this R80 gs about 2 years ago, rode it a while a and then saw IanB's R80 gs ans that was that......
A long story started.....
In the meantime, I bought a new house which has take 7 months to sort out bla bla so a year later out of storage comes my R80 gs, with violence being threatened from IanB if I dont get my butt into gear.......
To make it worse, the great IanB and paid my - non refundable deposit - for accomodation for the GS gathering in April........
Boy, have I got some work to do.....!!!!!
A few pics to follow.

This is what I started with.
I don't have all my old pics - laptop got lifted & lost a whole lot!!
My avarat pic is pretty much what it looked like. R90 screen and dashboard was terrible.

Hey Mark, its quite daunting to post anything of this nature on the forum in comparison with what you are doing on that HP of yours.  :peepwall:   :thumleft:

Nice one, Lex.
Comments about the wiring: Chuck it away and start new. Otherwise, there will aways be issues. The wires are 30+ years old.
For both my bikes I bought new BMW looms. Expensive but right. Plug and play. The wiring is not that complicated once you understand the wiring diagram

Side-stand: cut it and make it longer. The original is awkward and the bike leans were far over. Otherwise look at the design for Marks bike. Fits at the footpegs and much easier to get the bike on the side stand. But is requires some welding and fitting to get it right for your configuration (centre stand and exhaust)

Hey Lex - methinks you are ready for a new GS adventure - I suspect you have a few more pics to post on here. In the meantime between now and the GG lets go for a ride sometime with Ian on the XR's.
