WHAT THE DESERT RUN IS
We go from Kuruman in the Northern Cape to Swakopmund in Namibia where we stay for three days before returning. All types of people of all ages have been taking part over the years with their own vehicles like motorcycles, 4X4's, bakkies, kombis, cars, quad ATVâ??s, micro lights and sidecars.
Vehicles on public roads should be licenced. At overnight stops there is plenty of space for camping and no booking is required but you are required to pay a camping fee on arrival. Chalets and hotel rooms en route can be booked but do it early - they go quickly. We have booked more than enough chalets for everyone at Swakopmund. The information herein is easy to follow. You will not get lost. We will be at Kuruman the whole day Friday to answer questions and will have a 9pm briefing in the bar/dining room to clarify last minute things and there is also plenty of time to find out everything en route.
KURUMAN - 1ST NIGHT (3 APRIL 2009)
At Kuruman please put the supplied numbers on your vehicle - every car, bakkie, quad and bike, even if it is a kiddy quad to be ridden only on the dunes. We will hand out three sets of numbers to each vehicle, to be put on so that the number can be viewed from the sides and the top - for helicopter identification. We will give authorities a corresponding list of the owner of each numbered vehicle, with name, address, cell and telephone numbers, which chalets or bungalow he stays in at Swakop and who he is traveling with and who his family and friends are. He can be identified when gallivanting off into illegal territory such as off the roads or tracks en route to Swakop or on the dunes outside demarcated areas. The three sets will be, for example, three yellow oval sticky vinylâ??s, each with the inscription Namib Desert Run and the number (for example) 123 in black, for Joe Bloggs to stick one on either side of his quad and one on top of a mudguard. He will get a different number for his car, and
another for his sonâ??s quad.
Another recent change will be armbands for everyone. This will help identification of people as genuine Desert Runners - we cannot be blamed for sins of others, on the dunes or elsewhere - and will help administration muchly.
All vehicles in Namibia have to be registered, including quads and MX bikes on trailers. If yours is not, we will give you documentation at Kuruman to make it legal. The law does exempt certain vehicles from this registration law including vehicles designed for racing. This includes quads and off-road bikes and, in order to make sure we have no hassles from any authorities, we will give you at Kuruman:
1. A copy of the Namibian law stating that vehicles designed for racing are exempt from being registered. Chapter 3, Part 1Section 13 (1) (f) (â??Registration and licencing of motor vehicles...â?) Government Gazette 30 March 2001 No. 2503, which lists these as â??designed exclusively for racing... if that motor vehicle is not operated on a public roadâ?. Show this to anyone who asks and, then show them.
2. A letter from the relevant importer (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Bombardier, Polaris, KTM etc.) stating that your bike is designed for racing. We have a letter from each of these with a list of their off-road bikes and quads. You will need both these (or valid registration papers) at any roadblock, such as the permanent one as we get into Windhoek. If in doubt, get a 21 day paper plate registration from your friendly dealer. Hand in your passports at Kuruman and our advance party will do most of the Rietfontein border
formalities to save time.
Also please hand in a container of petrol to our backup truck for your bike or quad to use on the Molopo section the next day. The truck will leave early on Saturday and will be stationed about halfway to Molopo Hotel. Instead of riders having to wait for their backup when they run out of petrol on this section, they can refill when they arrive at the truck.
Please attend the 9pm briefing in the bar area at Red Sands on Friday.
We will have extra T-Shirts, ladiesâ?? tops, caps, beanies and things and (not shown on the entry form) smart long-sleeved T-shirt sweaters.
THE ROAD MAP DIRECTIONS
You will be given a separate laminated easy reference route guide at Kuruman.
