Why we (should) wear boots. WARNING VERY GRAPHIC!!!
« on: September 20, 2018, 08:55:15 am »
Spoiler: I wasnít wearing mine.

I didnít want to post anything about this injury before I had a bit of clarity on recovery but it looks like I am almost out of real danger.

About six weeks ago, I clipped a pole with my bikes gear lever and footpeg at maybe 30km/h. The force of the footpeg against my foot caused degloving of my foot sole and the impact broke my big toe in three places. My foot tore open from my heel all the way to my little toe. Large parts of the foot suffered tissue damage from the impact. An incision had to be made on the top of my foot to relieve preassure from swelling and for drainage. This cut was then enlarged and used for access to put a plate on my big toe. I was in hospital for two weeks and Iíve been going for wound care twice weekly since (4 weeks) and will be for at least another 4. Probably more. This is to treat necrosis of parts of the sole as well as other areas that suffered trauma.

According to the two surgeons, wound care nurses, ER doctors.... well just everyone involved, I was extremely lucky not to have lost my foot. And even moreso that I am likely to make a relatively good recovery. I am not out of the woods yet, far from it but it at least sounds like the worst case scenario is now off the table.

Iím in two minds about posting the really graphic pics but it could serve as a warning to others and a reminder to myself. Iíll maybe save them for later so they donít pop up at the top of the thread.

This is what my shoe looks like.

I have two sets of boots but I obviously wasnít wearing either. My SG12s wouldíve greatly reduced the injury but I only wear them when I plan to go offroad. For other stuff I usually use W2 adventure boots and I am not convinced there wouldíve been much difference in the outcome with them over tekkies.

In the mean time I can only dream about riding for the next few months.

Sheesh! that must have been bloody painful.  :eek7: Hope you heal well and soon.

I'm not a total ATGATT freak, but I generally wear the usual helmet jacket and gloves. Pants not so much, but almost always my boots. Can't afford the best MX Sidi's or whatever, but the most substantial ones I can afford, and I reckon I'd feel more naked on a bike without gloves and boots than without a helmet.

Jaco,
Where you offroad on suburban'ning?

Regardless, may you heal quick and with as little after effects as possible.

I too have a foot incident.
With ankle boots, clipped a car's front corner bumper passing it on the right, it wasn't indicating to turn right, wham.

Practically crushed all the metatarsals in my left foot. Had a reconstructive surgeon on the emergency call at City Park. Pretty sure he saved my foot, if it was any other type of doctor, not so much.

Do I ATGATT?
Sadly, no. Pip, torso, hands yes.
And I commute on my bike, daily.

Suburbs. I didnít have a car so rode everywhere and got a little slack with kit. Iím usually fully kitted when riding recreationally. Needless to say Iíve had to buy a car with auto box now

Wishing you a succesful recovery mate, must have been moerse painful!

On a lighter note, poor Vans... A classic pair of Checkers there that looks like they were just worn in nicely!

Dankie vir die herrinnering. Mens is maar geneig om n kans te vat so af en toe en dink nie altyd aan die gevolge wat dalk lang termyn mag wees nie.

All the best with the recovery and I am sorry to hear about the injuries.

I have attended a few BMW training days and they go on and on about boots in particular.

They use the example that proper boots may be R5k plus but the anaesthetists bill would be more than that without the other costs, time off work, etc.
