My hunch (reinforced by having seen quite a few RR's in remote places) is that water in the tank mainly stuffs up our pumps.
Jerrycan-filling, or worse, coke-bottle fuelstops we all know, and we'd not think twice when we had carburettors... but with EFI these days things ain't that simple anymore.
The std filtering is probably good enough when you live in Europe, strictly controlled enviro-tankstations galore, but here it's a tad different.
Zero personal experience yet but the Guglatech socks seem to be the ticket: they stop water getting into the tank plus they filter out very small fines.
I presume you'll have to take them out to clean from time to time but that's a minor hassle, anyone obviously will prefer doing this than swapping a fuelpump somewhere out in the field.
With the 701 (and I reckon the 690 also) one has to hold the filler nozzle oneself to prevent jamming it in until it rests on the tank's bottom, in doing so possibly damaging the sock - but I'll do that with a smile.
