Bucket List Ride - Old Mill Drift Pass YES! (VIDEO UPDATE)
« on: March 04, 2019, 05:49:23 pm »
***Update***

Just want to put the video on the front page so it doesn't get lost at the back of the report.

**************

So I've got this bucket list thing that I've been trying to tick off since I started adventure riding about six years ago. Many of the ideas come from ride reports I see right here on WD (which is a problem cause the bucket list just keeps growing :P )

There have been a couple of good ones so far and I thought I'd share as I haven't posted RR's on all of them:

Van Zyls Pass - I am grateful to have been a part of the Honda Quest experience, it wouldn't have been so easy to achieve otherwise.

Bastervoetpad - This one wasn't so bad :) but heck it was beautiful.

Orrie Baragwanath Pass - EPIC! Pretty rough, but awesome, one of my favourites,

2017 on the Twin

Back again on the 701.

This is one of my favourite places.

Bezuidenhouts Pass - I was still a bit of a newbie when we did this, it was pretty challenging on the 950SE at the time. I pat myself big time on the shoulder for this one.

Ongeluksnek Pass - This was a tough one, even on the 701!

Mathabeng Pass - Done this twice now, I didn't even know this was a bucket list item until we found the pass by accident, in any case it was so awesome I felt we needed to go back and tick it again :P

First time with the 950SE

Second time round on the 701, the pass has deteriorated a lot so glad for the smaller bike.

Baviaanskloof - Popular choice, but absolutely epic, loved it!

Then of course there was more the usual favourites, like Sani, Die Hel, Rankins, Naude's neck, Normandien pass, all the beautiful scenic passes in the cape, all ticked, all lekker, just missing Old Postal Route, will be back for that one :ricky:

There are also many more things I'd still like to do, like Doodsakker, Hunters road, some of the national park cut line roads (Tau with their trip to Khaudum comes to mind), the Richtersveld, Road to Hell, Moz coastal roads (thanks for that one Xpat), riding with Losper and co in Lesotho, climbing Dune 7, riding some more of the riverbeds of Namibia and maybe even Botswana... But for now :)

Lets get back to the present! One of the passes both HSK and I have always wanted to ride was the Old Mill Drift Pass near Clarens. It's not even that far from Gauteng but somehow we NEVER EVER got to it.
Anyway, we've been working hard, we needed some time off. I phoned around, accommodation was booked full everywhere, suddenly there was a cancellation at a highly recommended place, our bags and bikes got packed and we headed out to the beautiful Omega Mountain retreat near the Lesotho border.

Busy sorting out photos, I've got AMAZING video footage too but that will take longer.

I would not want to do Ongeluksnek with mud thrown in, hectic!

We leave Gauteng Friday afternoon for Clarens, grab a bite to eat and carry on to our accommodation at Omega Mountain Retreat about 15km out of town, right on the Lesotho border. What a lovely place to stay, the owner is a dirt bike rider as well and involved with the Clarens Rocks group on facebook. As the owners were not there though we spoke to Jackie the farm manager who gave us some great advice. I also had the route on my gps (thanks Losper!) so we wouldn't get lost.
There are no fences to be seen and you can ride in just about any direction. This is biking heaven ;D There's old patrol routes all along the river bordering Lesotho. Jackie gives us directions to Old Mill Drift and says we can just follow the river going east and we'll eventually get to the pass. We relax and get our bikes ready for our ride the next day.

Our cottage for the weekend.
As we'd be riding up the pass and wanting to also get off the beaten track a bit more and go exploring, the obvious choice was to take our 500 "adventures". :ricky:

The view from our cottage.

Time to relax. Tomorrow we will ride across this beautiful landscape.

"If this is heaven, I don't know what it's for, if I cant find you there, I don't care."

My most memorable trips have always been with my partner HSK. It is nice to ride with other people, but there's a certain magic to sharing this type of experience with the one you love. I guess some people feel that way about riding solo. This is almost like riding solo, but together... The best part about being a couple who ride is just that, riding together, just understanding each other, sharing the passion and taking the time to enjoy every moment.

Before I start with the ride I'd like to share a few more photos I took with the drone to give an idea of just how incredibly beautiful this setting is.

The road that can be seen running all along the river is the one that eventually leads to the Old Mill Pass. We explore it both to the east and west over the weekend.

It is a stunning route - we did it some years back, possibly the first on big litre class adventure bikes. I have always wanted to go back on a lighter bike. There are two slightly different routes.

Two slightly different routes? :) Now I need to know more! I've looked at some of the area on google maps and there's some places where the road splits off from the pass (dead ends though?) At the moment the pass is definitely not going to be easy on a bigger bike, going down maybe, but not the direction we went, not unless you are a total badass or want an extreme kind of challenge  ;D :peepwall: :ricky:

Ja we did it up - it may well have deteriorated since then. Was not for the feint hearted then. Managed to knock a hole in my sump with the bashplate of my HP2 going down the other side, which was fixed with Pratleys Steel and lasted for a few weeks of touring there after.  :ricky: We did have a least one wuss with us laying on his back, refusing to go further and making the international emergency signal for chopper rescue and squeaking 'ek kan nie meer korporaal'  :lol8:
Brilliant part of the country.

We leave our cabin just after 7am on Saturday morning and follow Jackie's directions to the river. "Turn left onto the tweespoort at the big trees, then keep on going until you reach the river, after that follow the river East until you get to a gate."

Yay, lets go!

We stop often and take plenty of photos. This place is so beautiful, I can't say it enough.

The road was a bit rough and rocky in places, nothing serious though, not yet ;D

"Go through the gate, turn right, and follow the tar road until it becomes a dirt road again, the start of the pass is not far now".

What's this random sign. Wait what? DINOSAURS!? Immediately this song gets stuck in my head for the duration of the ride.

Losper mentioned to us that it is easy to hop in and out of Lesotho using the shallow crossings which can be found all along the river. The locals seem to be using them to go "shopping" so we figured heck why not :P
We popped over and rode along the other side of the border for a few km, then hopped on back when we got closer to the start of the pass.

OMG I will never forget that day, Master Beertjie to the rescue :imaposer:
And I loved that Aprilia, that was an awesome beginners bike, I am still recommending it to newbies. Just a pity there's not much support for Aprilia in SA anymore.

Anyway, I'll post another update tonight :) The video footage from the weekend is absolutely stunning, just need to find time to edit it...
