Author Topic: Swing Arm Rubber boot & other general maintenance (Read 1992 times)

My rubber boot is perished and HAS to be replaced.

How big of a job is this to do DYI and how easy is this to fuck up?

I am way too poor at the moment to take it in to the shop.

Your swingarm needs to be removed to do it. With the right tools it takes about an hour. Remove rear wheel, remove rear shock, remove swingarm. Only DIY issue is going to be getting the RHS pivot out. I have a slide hammer that pulls it out, but there are other ways of doing it.

Not bad... But there is no Jughead in the big smoke.

I will park the bike in the meantime and do some reading up on it. I like the idea of trying it myself but will need to be certain I am comfortable..

Does any of the bolts need to be torqued?

Not such a hard job to do as long as you have tools .

Cool, I will have to check what tools I have vs what is needed. Have torx keys, allen keys and spanners, torx ones are not the best, so maybe I will start getting proper ones as I need them.

Any special tools needed? I definitely do not have a slide hammer that Jughead mentioned, don't even know what it looks like. Not yet.

It also shows tools. So Jughead, if this carries your approval then you don't need to make extra effort unless you really want to... The more info I have the better!

Is the slide hammer the tool used @3:05?

EDIT: Anyone know Russian, seems there is some important information given but my Russian is limited to small quantities of vodka.

Also, a torque wrench looks essential..

The part in the video from 1:21 to 1:45 is totally unnecessary. There is no need to drain the fd fluid or remove the fd from the swingarm. Just plug the sensor hole using the original o-ring and the back end of the correct size drill bit.

Not having a slide hammer, I used threaded bar, some washers and nuts with a big plug socket as the slide, popped out in no time

Getting closer to D-day.

If everything works out as planned, I will be doing this job on Saturday (or at least start).

I am going to also drain and refil gearbox oil, and FD oil, I think its due anyway, so might as well do the whole shebang.

I have read on r1200gs.info forum that you need to replace the bolt holding the FD to the swing arm every time you loosen it:
"There is a service bulletin that says you must replace the nut that holds the paralever's torque arm to the final drive. Apparently it is a "one-time" use item, and SHOULD BE REPLACED if removed!"

What is the reason for this? fatigue?

From what I have read so far is that the gearbox and FD takes the same oil?
Recommended is SAE 75W140
Any other suggestions? Brand?

I use Fuchs Silkolene Comp Gear (can't remember the viscosity now, will have to check for you), 800ml in the gearbox and 180ml in the FD.

Castrol do a 75W140 Syntrax I think (it is a GL5 LSD Lubricant)

A client in town did his without removing the swingarm. Why? Because he could not remove the swingarm at all apart from using a grinder!!

Mines a bit perished too so will ask him how he did it when the time comes.

Thank you! Fuchs is difficult to get hold of in my experience, also I don't know where to look.
