Ncwadi Quickie
« on: January 29, 2020, 04:39:09 pm »
So this weekend I didn't have much to do, my wife is away in Zim and my kids were doing their own thing. I had decided not to ride this weekend as I wanted to preserve the new knobbly I had put on for our Lesotho trip next weekend, but when I saw that Greg, Carey and Mark were planning a ride out at ncwadi I couldn't resist.

They could only get away from Kloof in Durban at 09h30, so we would meet at UmlongoNek Station at 11h30.

I left Hilton on my own at about 7.30, giving me ample time to get to the meeting point. My route took me out through Taylor's Halt and ElandsKop.

How can I be lost if I've got nowhere to go?

The ride seemed to flash by and before I knew it I was at the meeting spot, 90 minutes ahead of schedule.

So I did something I had been thinking about doing for a while, some Railway Track Riding. I have in the past made sure that no trains run on these tracks any more, so I felt quite safe. I wasn't nearly as jarring as I thought it would be, but you do have to concentrate.

Was great fun.

Before I knew it I had been going for 50 minutes and had to turn around because our meeting was in 40 minutes time.

The joy of having a light bike meant turning around wasn't too much of a mission

When I arrived at the meeting spot the others were there already. Greg on his 1090, Carey on her GS800 and Mark on his 660Z

A short dirt road led to a nice uphill single track through the forest.

Hats off to Greg and Carey for taking their heavy bikes into this terrain.

At one stage I suggested to Carey that we swap bikes for a bit, because she and Greg are thinking of getting light enduro bikes for this type of riding, so I rode her 800 and she took my 520.

Damn I was happy to swap back

Big respect to both of them for taking those heavy machines along these tracks.

And finally.

We couldn't believe how drained we all were after the ride, I think we didn't realize quite how hot it was, and pushing and pulling those big bike out of the rivers and swamps and over rocks really took its toll on all of us.

Our stop for ice cold drinks at the local shebeen came just in time

Will be back to this area again soon, some awesome riding opportunities here  :thumleft:

Beautiful Rolling Hills. But don't you have roads in KZN ?  :peepwall:

Some hectic downhills and rocky to boot. You KZN riders are hard-core  :thumleft: :thumleft:

Man, I keep finding threads of you on your light bike running around with your mates on their Nimitz class crushers. Sure, they seem to be able to do it, but why do they want to do it on those bikes? For your sake and theirs, I hope they come around to your thinking. It's so much more fun riding the right bike for the terrain, and it's even more fun when all your mates are on the same/similar steeds.

Beautiful area you were playing in. RR riding is fun, but I've only done it on tracks that are in use... sometimes. Never know when a train might show up! It makes a man feel edgy! I'm shocked the rails and sleepers haven't been nicked on those tracks yet.

Cheers

Nice Jon, as usual, stunning scenery and riding in our neck of the woods, pun intended. I miss those rides.
