Many moons ago....
« on: April 25, 2020, 11:25:44 am »
I am scratching around in my photos today, taking a trip down memory lane.  I loaded an app onto my phone that scans pix really well,  I want to preserve them digitally as soon many of them will be so faded they won't be viewable anymore.

I came across this newspaper clipping out of the Citizen newspaper that I kept, must be around 1979 or '80, maybe '81.  Unfortunately I never wrote the date on the clipping.  Back then, while I was in the army, I saved almost all my money and had a dream to buy an XT500 and do the reverse trip of that that these Hollanders did.  Well life, studying, job, girlfriends and so on happened.  The world was big back then, too many things claimed my attention.  I couldn't give 100% attention to all of them and sadly, this dream fell by the wayside.  Nowadays, the world is too small to hold me.  My jeukvoete raak nie meer gekrap nie.

Later in life, still riding bikes but mostly street bikes, I could live out a smaller version of my dream by traveling a lot of places. Then along came "dual sport" or "adventure biking", Adventure Rider forum, Wilddog forum. My leisure activity now had a name.

And here we are today (yes I know: never start a sentence with "and"  ;D), overlanding, adventure biking, women living on the motorbike trails of the world, entire industries built on a lifestyle that had humble beginnings many moons ago.

This little tent saw many many places around the country.  No sleeping pad, gas stove, flysheet, groundsheet, panniers, GPS, ABS, ESC, TC, cellphones, ANC, VAT, internet and other crap.

First pic near White River

Second pic at a caravan park near Summerstrand beach, a little kloof somewhere there.  Either it doesn't exist any longer or I'll never find it again.

My friend Jack Fitzpatrick and I en route to Keurbooms River caravan Park at Plet for Christmas camping.  This is the bridge over the (River Kwai) Orange River on the N1.  He had unzipped his jacket as it was damn hot and a bee flew in and stung him.  He was not a happy chappie on this pic.

My luggage was a bag from Pep Stores, normal bungee cords, my army slaapsak.  How did we manage before Kriega, Wolfman, Enduristan, Rok straps, First Ascent and so on?  :lol8:

On the bank behind Jack is where River Destiny Lodge stands today. (edit: this pic is taken looking downstream, River Destiny would be behind me taking the pic)

Jan -Lucas then REPEATED the trip similar 30-odd years later, within last 5 years, with his Son, direction Europe, retracing his footsteps, I guess.

(He also holds some impressive Killarney lap times, too!)

What happened to these companies:

  • Preston Petty
  • Sinisalo
  • Nava helmets
  • Kerker exhausts

There must be many more, faded into the mists of time

You can still buy Preston Petty products, made by Polisport in Portugal, Preston himself was still alive last I heard, lots of bad business deals, he was in ill health living in a camper somewhere outside L.A. they had a gofundme for him, suffering with heart disease   :sip:

I guess we all had (have) an unquenchable wanderlust in us.  I travelled many places back then.  I am always pleasantly surprised at how light one can travel.  Marketing and advertising has led us seriously astray.

First pic is my My Z1R Mk1 on Long Tom Pass at the top of Mount Anderson.  I later bought the larger Mk 2 fuel tank for it.  I think the original tank was about 13 liters or so.

Second pic my Eddie Lawson Replica (I always wanted the green one but by the time I could afford to buy one they were white only) near Bergville.

That is sad to hear Welsh.  Back in my day his products were almost legend.  Obligatory farkle on most off-road bikes.  Or scramblers as we called them then.  :)
