But let's start at the beginning.......

About three weeks ago, @Just Blip It! , Henry and myself set out to do some riding in Lekgalameetsi. Link to that RR - http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=251617.0

The plan was to ride Penge Pass,  the lesser known "Pass with no Name" and a few others to complete a loop. Most of these tracks were generously supplied by @Xpat - thank you Martin!

Things did not go according to plan - emergency repair to a holed radiator on Henry's 990, and shortly after  a puncture on Mark's 990. Unsure just how effective the repair on Henry's bike would be and unsure whether we would have sufficient time to complete the loop, we decided to play it safe and change our route accordingly. We ended up only riding Pass With No Name and a few other on route there. We vowed to go back as soon as possible to ride up the elusive Penge Pass.

Fast forward three weeks - Mark phoned me up and invited me along on another shot at Penge, I hastily cleared my diary and a week later met up with Mark and Japie in White River to start the trip. It was a beautiful morning in the Loweld and I was up early to get ready and I parked the 790 in the driveway - a few minutes later heard frantic screaming outside. Our neighbour was trying to prevent a giraffe from    "mounting" my bike...... I had to place a folded bike ramp in the drieway, which the bull kicked over to his very clear delight.

As with most of Mark's trips, the offroad riding starts just after you get on your bike. Most of the initial 45 min of riding was on familiar tracks that I've posted about before.

Our route for the day would take us along a few familiar but also plenty of “new to me” tracks. It wasn’t long before it became clear that Penge Pass would not be the only challenge on this trip......

Well done!  :thumleft:

I was also riding in that area (not Lekgalameetse - about 20 km west as the crow flies) and was pretty sure that you guys have no chance to do the full route (including that side dash up OB pass) in that heat. I was struggling in the sand and was little worried that you guys may overcook it on those passes which are very exposed to sun. But you are clearly made of stronger stuff than me...

On another note - I found another pass for you lot. It is in the mountain range just to the west of Legkalameetse (didn't check the name if there is any - I dubbed it Little Kaokoland as it reminds me the northern sections around VZP and Red Drum Pass) and shows some great promise (and can be combined with the passes in Legkalameetse). I will elaborate in my thread, but here is a teaser:

Martin, make no mistake, we were all three knackered by the time we got to Ofcalaco. It was a tough day of riding. Nearly 11 hours from when we left Bush Pub in the morning untill our return that night

Sounds great!

We begrudgingly took on the 110 km on tar to Ofcalaco where we would fill up with fuel before entering Lekgalameetsi.

It was already hot and humid when we reached Ofcalaco and to make things worse, Mark’s rear tyre was flat.......

We eventually entered Lekgalameetsi and started to tackle our route of 3 weeks ago in the opposite direction.

It soon became clear that we were not going to just quickly climb out of that valley on our way to go and ride Penge Pass. It was extremely slippery under foot after some good rain in the week leading up to our trip and even the slightest climb on the wet rocks exposed the only real weakness of out MotoZ rear tyres - traction on wet surfaces.

We were 45 minutes into the ride in Lekgalameetsi, had barely done a couple km in the valley and we were sitting next to our bikes, completely drained after pushing and pulling the bikes up some very average climbs and a monster  climb with very little traction. In fact, I remember coming down that very same section on our previous trip and hearing Mark comment in the headset that he would love to come ride up this hectic descent....
