Pyrenees on a 500
« on: June 24, 2021, 07:39:38 pm »
For the most part, the main crest of the Pyrenean mountain range, forms a divide between Spain and France.

I chose this region for its amazing variety.

Now seeing as I live in the Netherlands, I had to trailer my bike down to the South of France, which is about 1300km.

My planned route:

+- 1300km stretched over 5 days. We've done those distances on 450's over a weekend before, but I wanted to take some time to experience the scenery en cultures a bit.

My bike went through a bit of a transformation and this would be its first real test.

I fitted new-to-me cone valve forks, a couple days before departing on this trip, and had high hopes.

I left while still in lockdown, so I needed a PCR test certificate which is valid for 3 days.
At some point I will cross the border back into France, from Spain and that that stage, the certificate will be useless. I had no specific plan for this issue, except for finding a non-manned path through the mountains somewhere..

Non-essential travel in France is not allowed between 23:00 and 6:00
The travel restriction in France had me 'camping' out amongst the truckers on the border on Belgium/France.

First bad choice:
Choosing the more frugal Mercedes over my Touareg :bueller:

Trying to squeeze my almost 2m frame into the back of my Merc was a challenge but possible. Soos jy weet @Noneking , eks mos double jointed  :lol8:

Woke up at 5 and after a semi-hot coffee, I hit the road with great anticipation as I've never been in France before  ;D

Day 2:

Scoot seems ready but I was a bit concerned about how this back tire would hold up.
The TET track that I will be traveling has a couple waypoints of bike shops in Spain, so if needed, I could always pickup an 18' over there

Gonna be a good day

Day 1 is +-350Km, and I figured I can take it easy.

The path headed into the mountains and I just had to stop to take this picture.

About 15km's into the ride, I hit the 1st single track.

This section was surprisingly hard! The track up there is severely eroded with rocks to avoid and sharp switch-backs.
I was happy to be on a 500 here and not my old 990

Took no photos of that part as I was already starting to battle the heat and had to maintain my momentum in the technical.

I was very happy to be rather remote already and the scenery was great. I would not say that I was impressed with the suspension though. I reckoned it's probably just the added weight of my baggage and a full tank of gas
