A Four- day Baptism to Off-road Riding
« on: September 07, 2009, 02:05:20 am »
Day 1[/u]

My kids were keen to learn how to ride a bike. Seeing as they has both learnt how to ride bicycles in the past, this was the logical next step. So when they came out to Perú thats exactly what we did. The chosen bike was a KTM 85 two stroke, a powerful machine for smaller people, perfect for a 10 yr son and 13 yr daughter.

We started out with the very basics: How to get a bike off and onto a trailer, tying it down, checking oil and fuel etc.

Then came the first phase: Getting the bike started, pulling away and using the brakes and clutch.

Elaine was first up and managed a nice loop in the park (no photos, sorry). Here she is after a few more, without incident. Well done!

Royd has a turn to learn about balancing a machine heavier than one´s weight.

Then there were the basics of pulling away.

It did not take long for him to get the hang of it.

The next important point is learning that “You go where you look”:

Well Royd looked at a wall, then away at a door, a ramp and finally telephone pole. My first off!

After the first spectacular wipeout, Royd was a little more wobbly.

Thee cheers to ATTGAT (All The Gear All The Time)!

The key to your first falls is to get back up and ride before the confidence is totally gone. Royd did just that.

Well done Royd!

Its always good to end on a high note. So that was the end of the first, albeit short day.

Day 2

This time we went to a footbal pitch. Elaine, feeling full of inspiration started the bike for her brother

He quickly got the hang of things again:

The trick is not to look down but rather ahead of you, where you are going. Its hard to do that but Royd is a fast learner!

Then it was Elaines turn. Elaine initially battled and did what we all do: Don´t look down!

Amazingly she still kept her balance, and soon she was better than the rest of us at it.

The picture of intense concentration:

Then we moved onto stopping and starting. Easier than it sounds, especially when you let the clutch out too fast!

Its a pain kicking and kicking if youre not in neutral!

The look of satisfaction is priceless to see!

Now came the hard bit: Tight turns. Once again the trick is to look where you want bike to be after turning. Your mind remembers what was seen immediately ahead in your peripheral vision, so its possible to turn one´s head.

The first couple of turns are hardest to do, to break your vision away from the obvious straight line makes the turns too wide.

Its so easy to look down and get a wobbly too! Here you can see balance going as she looks down.

Elaine is quick to get it though.

She soon becomes a maestro at turning tight turns, and weaves figures-of-eight through the goal posts:

More on this and desert riding next...

Awesome

How interested would you say Elaine is in biking compared to Royd?

I have often wondered if one can cultivate an interest in girls when they are young or if the women on this forum are anomalies. Girls are traditionally more interested in make-up and pink dresses than KTM 85 two-smokes no?

Just great, it must be fun to train the kids and spend time with them with such a nice big riding area. Enjoy every moment!

If they actually grow up and don't want to ride a bike, at least you had spent some quality time and I'm sure that their confidence levels are waaaay up.  Also a lesson in life if you think about it - look where you want to go!!!

Good question. Elaine enjoys it I think as much as Royd. She is more cautious though, I would guess that is the only difference. She is very much a young lady though. It´ll be interesting to see if she does DS riding when she is older.

Here is Royd: Remember to look where you want to turn.

Royd is a little bit shorter, so he has to resort to modified techniques when it comes to starting the bike!

Elain sometimes helps hold the bike so he can kick start it easily.

Royd loses concentration.....

He is ok and is soon tearing around again.

It time to do some desert riding:

Day 4

Royd cant wait to get out there!

By now he is used to getting started on his own.

There is only a thin layer of powder here..

But its enough to make things fairly slippery.

The kids find sand surprisingly easy.

Elaine is equally at home, power sliding all over the place.

Well done Elaine!

Its Royds turn, and he charges all over theplace with confidence.

HE even manages to pick up the front wheel!

No fear as Royd charges through a boulder strewn area.

Clearly its time to step up the training to advanced riding. Its getting late here, so I'll post the next update next week. Thanks for reading, and your comments!

Lovely!! I wish I could have been able to offer my kids such fun. But at least my son, now that he's grown up, rides a bike. I couldn't persuade my daughter though.

Well done on doing this the correct way. Like what has been said: if they dont like it later on, they will have had the best possible opportunity to know it.
