Stations... Our Glorious Past
« on: November 15, 2010, 08:35:25 am »
I tried searching for a similar thread but after page 4 gave up. We see so many deserted station while out riding so I though of starting this thread and the pictures I took at Kloofeind Station yesterday.
Here are some of the pics I took with my cellphone.
The building itself is still in good shape but very vandalized with every vestige of copper stripped by cable thieves... signal system is non existent so I do not think the siding track is even operational anymore.
Seeing a coffin and a exercise bike inside brought a smile to my face... worthless in the eye of the modern scavenger it seems.
I wonder what it would be like to turn this into a place to stay?

Here is one I took years ago.

My comment about it:
Quote
The old station at Klipdale.  This has made me aware of how dignified was the old SAR architecture.  I am going to look out for it in my travels.

I have an interest in buildings made of corrugated iron.  SAR was very good at them as shown by that picture.
EDIT: The walls are also corrugated iron.  Klipdale is between Caledon & Malgas.

Nice one Toktokkie!
Agreed, the SAR built things to last! We have several stations etc. around here that are quite badly vandalized, cables ripped out, roof missing, some window frames ripped out but the walls seem to be impervious to crowbars. :mwink:

Besides the fact that a lot of these stations will be in the dry interior the quality of the galvanising, thickness & quality of steel was incomparable to todays blik they sell you.
Nice buildings :) Restoration project?
