Some time ago my 70 - 200 f4L had a small dropping incident (coffee table at guest house collapsed) and the auto-focus completely failed.
Sent it in for repairs and when I got it back it seemed sharper than ever before.

Yes this is a good technique
My brand new D7000 fell off a roof a few months back and this is the method i used to test the lens
