I’d been looking forward to visiting Verneukpan ever since the WD’s started posting pics of the now famous bell on the forum and after read Bus's ride report where they never actually made it to the pan.
The thought of an open space so wide that you could ride the wheels off your bike just sounded too good to be true.
I’d managed to convince my soutie maatjie, David of Droomers Yamaha fame to join me on the trip and so it was that 2 white Super Tenere’s left a very chilly & wet CT on Fri morning, destination Loeriesfontein via the Oasis, Wuppertal route.
First stop was at Op die Berg for juice for the big Yammies and Obbie for us to warm up.
Then it was the compulsory stopover at Gerrit & Chantal at Oasis for a T-bone for lunch… njom njom. We were supposed to meet DirtyHarry there but he got tired of waiting. We missed him by 10mins, sorry Harry.
The road to Eselbank is in the best condition I’ve ever seen it, almost too good to be enjoyed properly but it was still thirsty work for a first timer. Dave enjoying some pure mountain water.
We stopped quite often to enjoy the spectacular views. You do this route and injustice by rushing through it.
In Wuppertal and stopped at the cafe to enjoy a cold Coke. It was already after 3pm and we still had 200km’s to do so we had to twist the ST’s ears to make it to Loeriesfontein before dark.
There was still some time to pose like a porn star though.
The sun was dropping fast and so was the temperature. The heated grips I fitted before the trip were the dogs danglers.
Even with signboards David manages to go in the wrong direction
We finally pulled into town just as the last rays of warmth were disappearing over the horizon and were greeted by a cheerful bunch of WD’s, happy to see the pack finally full.
Hingsding really went out of his way with the accommodation in Loeriesfontein, it was the height of luxury
The supper was the traditional WD affair with JC and Heimer leading the charge.
Not everyone enjoyed it though, even the dog thought they were mad eating skaap kop
A good kuier session was had by all with the odd KTM being started late at night and being redlined >
After a long day in the saddle our beds were calling, and so day 1 came to an end with day 2 promising even greater riding :thumleft:
