Permits Required for Africa Tour
« on: July 14, 2012, 08:30:20 pm »
Hi I am new to Wild Dogs,

My mate and I are planning a ride from Pretoria to Arusha in Tanzania. Our intended Route is through Botswana, Zimbabwe, Moz, Malawi and then finally into Tanzania. I would like to know whether there are any special permits or documents required to enter these countries with our bikes? If you have any advice it will be greatly appreciated!!!

We are riding a GS650 Dakar and a KTM 690 R.

Regards

Drew

No nothing, just your registration papers to show the bike is on your name. Buy Comesa in Botswana or Zim, it's an insurance that will pay if you are in an accident for the other parties damage.

its a good idea to make good quality color copy of registration papers and to put it in a plastick sleeve. Also scan your registration paper and mail it to yourself. Then you  can always print it if you lost it and need a copy which looks origional

Tanzania requires a visa.
Yup, $50 per
As someone said, make sure to get the COMESA 3rd party otherwise you'll get screwed as you cross borders.

Hi, I'm also newbie on Wild Dog,

I'm flying to Namibia in a couple of weeks to get my brother's GS and drive it back to SA via Botswana.
Can you please help me with what documentation and papers I wil need to cross the borders?
Also, is a learners valid in Namibia and Botswana or do I need a Drivers license?

Any help will be appreciated

You may run into problems if bike is in your brothers name. Not sure how picky Bot and SA boarder staff will be but I would recommend you get a notarized letter from your brother stating you have his permission to travel with his bike.  I know this can be a real problem in some countries if names do not match registration.

Werner,

As Camino said - get a letter from your brother and have it notorised by the Namibian police. You should go together and take copies of your ID's and passports.

I'd skip Botswana completely if you have a learners only as they are full of shit. Go the longer route to Noordoever instead.

Hi guys, could you please clarify about COMESA? What's that? Insurance?

Insurance it's not needed in Angola :) I'll try to do some insurance in another country with route countries coverage. Don't know if possible.
