Spend the weekend at my folks in Limpopo (30km outside Vaalwater). Christelle and I only left at 4pm on Saturday, so we travelled on the N1. There was no traffic so riding was a pleasure on the high way.
We knew we had to do the last 30 km of gravel in the dark but it was fine as I know the road. The problem came in that the road was freshly grated and I had the knobblies at 3bar on the back. This felt like trying to surf on a piano. So we stopped to deflate the tyres. Took the back to 2bar. This sorted that out. The rest of the weekend was un-eventfully. It is just very hot and very dry in that part of the country and the further north you go the worst is gets.
The ride back was a nightmare. I contemplated going via Thabazimbi and the Brits back to JHB but opted for the shorter N1. Big mistake. The line at the Carousel Tollgate was backed up 4 km and even though I could ride on the side of the road the last 700m took nearly 20 min to do. The total travel time was more than an hour longer then what it was suppose to be.
Here are a few pics.
