Look at the October Getaway. This guy rode over 24 000km from Argentina through 17 countries to San Francisco on a Honda XR250 (OK, calm down now Trailrider ;D). This is a guy with no off-road riding experience. When in Chile, the bike started jerking and spluttering at an altitude of 3000m - what does he do - he REMOVES the air filter! After that, he reckons the bike ran much better! SO basically, he rode about 2/3rds of the trip without an air filter. He only went through 1 set of tyres and he reckons "the chain and sprockets were taking strain" by the time he left the bike in America!
