Honest question; why can the river beds not be ridden?

For a multitude of reasons, conservation being the primary one. In addition, the tracks leave extremely un-natural "footprints" in the sand, which spoil the natural splendour of the area.

Until the next flow of water.

waar is die bewyse?

om iets te se en ouens se nommerplate publiek te maak omdat hulle iets vermoedelik gedoen het wat iemand af gepis het is net onaanvaarbaar.

Isn't this about respect and integrity (this clearly the lack therof), be that environment, flora and fauna ? That's certainly what I have always felt this forum strives to uphold and nurture amoungst members and long may this remain it's intentions.

I must say Danie makes an excellent point.

I don't condone what happened (there were signs, it seems there are rules there about disturbing the peace, whatnot & it is controlled private land in this case)

BUT

I don't buy the conservation story about riding in river beds. After all it is a just river bed. :dontknow:

Just because you don't "buy" it doesn't mean it lacks merit.
The Tuli Block is experiencing a severe drought. The river beds are dry and the tyre track damage will remain in the beds for at least another 3 months. Furthermore, tyre tracks are not natural phenomina - and they can be distracting to various animals, who have a far keener sense of disruption to their environment and habitat, than we mere motorcycle riding humans do. And then, these same tyre tracks are just unsightly (not to mention unnecessary) in a pristine and unspoilt environment - and they impact on the overall appearance of the entire place.
If someone came to your home and did wheelspins on your lawn and through your garden, generally tearing up the place, could the argument not be: "Oh well, it will come right after some rain?" Yes it may, but you have to live with this until such time as it does come right. Unspoilt should remain that way.
People ask us why we ride a motorcycle. For those who have experienced the joy, no explanation is necessary; for those who have not, no explanation is possible.

Until you do some research in the area (any area) you plan on riding off known roads you won't know the damage you may cause - even years down the line. I am sure the fishermen etc that road on the beaches in northern natal years ago did not realize they could have potentially wiped out a whole species of turtles.
Personally I try very hard to not break the law (any law - well other than the seat belt one :-( ) and respect those around me, doing otherwise is just plain selfish! There are places to go and be noisy and to "hone" your skills. Private property and nature reserves are not those places! Its not just bikes / quads or 4 x 4s that are the problem :-( its a mentality and selfish lifestyle in general that will continue to be an issue. Is naming and shaming going to change their mentality? If it is a friend of yours are you going to walk away from that friendship? Perhaps giving their names to the authorities and getting them banned from ever entering the area will hurt them enough to make them understand the severity of their actions! And be a lesson to those who  may think it a laughable matter! It is really sad when a few spoil it for the rest! In this case you have the registration numbers. So perhaps the few can be appropriately punished and the many can learn a valuable lesson from it!
Even on days when you don't have the time or the energy, you are still the centre of your pet's world!
