Name the pass!
« on: October 02, 2007, 12:33:09 pm »
Who knows the name of the pass between Sutherland and Merweville?(NOT Komsberg!!!)

I drove past the sign at the turnoff a few kilometres South of Sutherland and thought "oh, well I can write it down later".
The road sign says "Merweville via ..."

Any ideas?

No. We are talking ESE of Sutherland.
Ouberg and Gannaga are W of Sutherland.

That's the road:

The road in green.
The pass in red.

The view from (almost) the top:

The gate is at the boundary of the Central Karoo (white sign r. of the gate) and the Northern Cape / Western Cape border.

The turnoff is about 9km south of Sutherland. The road runs past Sutherlands airstrip.

Thks Ekto, my minimalistic knowledge of Afrikaans allowed me to decipher that the pass in question does not have a proper name. The Karelskraalpass mentioned is that the pass as you go towards Sutherland from the gate?
Would that qualify the whole stretch of road as Karelskraalpass?

Or can we name it?

Maybe Wild Dog's Pass :)

You are the 1 man who question that road who look like a pass, so u cane call it what ever you like.

Hoe klink," Pass deLecap",? Sound good? ??? ???

I think I like the name ;D

The Karelskraal pass is the road 3km north of the foto of the gate, so this is your pass.
Sorry for the k@k ingelse ;D

I'v got 5CD's from the goverment general ;D  Mapes are 250 000 to 1. It cost me R120 for 5CD's. If u bring your own CD's, it is for free. That is where I get it.

Sorry for the spelling, after the rugby ;D ;D ;D ;D

Onlecapsmapmarkedinredonthegreenpathpass?

Do we have to write out he name on the road sign in Xhosha as well?

 :o

Almost as good as Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch also known as: St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel near to the rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio of the red cave.

Or: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronuku-pokaiwhenuakitanatahu which means:
The summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his flute to his loved one

Maybe we stick to Pass de Le Cap  :)

Passes often have two names.
One given by the local population and another given by the local government

Now you must give Le Cap a free "boarding pass" or something, because he have no pass  anymore. Especailly if its Allemans pas - every man's pass)
