Speedometer cable DR650se
« on: September 03, 2012, 05:16:35 pm »
My DR finally decided to break something.  I noticed that the speedometer is dead.  The speedometer cable is broken off near the bottom (inside cable).

Is it worthwhile having a new inner made up, or is it better buying a new complete cable unit?

What does it cost more or less?

Any cons to replacing just the inner?

I never serviced my speedo cable, is it something I should have done, re-greasing the cable from time to time?  I lube my clutch and choke cable, but did nothing with this one.  Looking at the break I think corrosion played a role in the breakage.

I guess when I refit a new one I should make sure that the speedo unit turns freely?

Anybody with an unused one who fitted a Vapor ?

Buy new. Replace complete cable, the inner often breaks due to damages or corrosion of the sleeve.

R 2 hundred something if I remember correctly. They normally last 30,000 - 40,000km

No maintenance required but pulling the cable out, wiping it off and greasing it before putting it back in won't hurt.
Use wheel bearing grease, oil will leak out. New ones come greased.
