Here's a little friend that comes to visit in the quadrangle of the Proserpine Hospital. Identified as a common Australian tree snake. It looks very similar in motion to our variegated bush snake. We only see one but I think that means only one at a time. As with all Aussie snakes the locals say it is "harmless." My son James told me about "harmless" Australian spiders......it may bite your hand, it will swell up like a football, you will be in excruciating pain for 6 months until your arm drops off but it won't kill you.

It appears that this dude (or lady) is living in a hollow under our front porch.

It is a Black Racer, a non-venomous constrictor that preys on frogs, lizards, mice, etc. So it is completely welcome to live there, as long as it stays out of the house, and out of the back yard where our Jack Russel, Maggie, will definitely kill it  :xxbah:

I got out my good Nikon camera, and using the long lense and creeping forward on my belly I was able to get quite close and get these pics for y'all.

Great pics!

As kids Mtunzini was our favourite place to be during June July hols... we camped in the reserve campgrounds, were told that they were to be found but never saw any, my first encounter was 1972 while on patrol in the Caprivi when I almost stepped on one, our Loot actually spotted it and yelled "Dekking!". It was so to say invisible in the leaf litter.

Check the distribution of Gaboons, The Caprivi is not part of their range.

Johan Marais, the leading snake expert in southern Africa, has their distribution in Eastern Zimbabwe and Natal coastal regions. Nothing in Caprivi.

More than likely a big Puff Adder.

Snake with the longest fangs, even known to grow double fangs. The owner of the St Lucia reptile parks son was bitten by one a couple of years ago and died.
