Watty got himself a new toy
« on: October 08, 2007, 04:15:34 pm »
I have always had a soft spot for those mid-sized bikes used in the famous Baja desert races.  Bikes such as the Honda XR250 Baja, the Yamaha TT250R-Raid, and the Suzuki DR250XC (Djebel) with their characteristic huge headlights, headstock mounted oil coolers, big fuel tanks, and tuff go-anywhere look that is quite appealing (in my mind at least...)

Most of these desert rides where never imported officially into South Africa, and only in the recent year they became available as grey imports.   Now, I was in luck and obtained just such a bike, a Suzuki Djebel DR250XC in a really excellent condition.  Man, it looks like this bike never saw any gravel in its live.  A fact supported by the present tyres on the scoot (Bridgestone Battlewings).

Some quick spec's for the purists:  DOHC 4 valves 249cc, 6 speed gearbox, air oil cooling, 17 l tank capacity, dry weight 118kg, one large-sized halogen headlight 200mm dia of 60/55W, s/steel xhaust, electric and kick start.

Any suggestions what to replace those Battlewings with?

Its power is wicked for a 250, however I don't plan on doing wheelies though because the headlight is too heavy  :o

Now, who is going night riding with me at the Bash?

Anyway, let the photo's tell the rest.

A new importer/dealer here in Port Elizabeth called Track & Tar Motorcycles.  I got the Djebel for R16k's.  Was told about the Djebel, went ASAP that same day to look, immediately took an option and, whilst in a happy mood, got both owners to join Wild Dogs!

I fitted T 63 Michelins to our Yammies, well priced and very good offroad.

Very good price, nice bikes. I have the DR250 with a Djebel tank. I think the tank is only 13 l though. It does have nice power for a 250 4t. Enjoy.

I think I need a 250 4T for exploring the bushveld.

More so than I need a 650.

Hmmmm, TTR-250.

The one to the left is the normal DR250 model. Had one just like it. It's a '97 model. Other one looks like a Honda XR. Watty on the 250's you can run any knobby as they would last a lifetime. T63 is a good option but a bit pricey.

Some answers:  Have not yet explored its top speed.  A review on a USA site I found claims 124 km/h with 2 up.

The bikes in the background are from left a Suzuki DR250RS @ R16k, a Honda XLR650L @ R28k and a Honda XLR250 @ R16k.  The day before I arrived to follow-up the tip I got about the Djebel a Yamaha TT250R-Raid was sold for R17k.

The fuel tank capacity on this baby is definately 17 litres! - a fact supported by the Japanese website of Suzuki.  http://www1.suzuki.co.jp/motor/Djebel250xc/detail.html
It would appear that the DR250XC Djebel is quite different from the DR200 Djebel version, hence the smaller 13 litre tank was perhaps the one used by Digitaldan?

I also learned that since 2000 the Djebel DR 250 XC has been exported to America as a DRZ-250, albeit with cosmetic changes such as headlight, colour scheme, etc.

Watty - is the XLR650L an electric start ?

If you don't mind - can you find out some detail about it ?

I'm starting to look for a DR650 for that price, but after seeing pics of Kaboef's new scoot and seeing Topbox's XR in action I would really not mind that one ...

IF only it has electric start ...

(Sorry for the 9/11)
