This report is from a friend that took 2 air-cooled Huskies to compete in Class 4B. One 1982 500cc 2T and one 1983 500cc 4T both with WR gearboxes and WR 2T 8 plate clutches fitted. And he was running 17/48 sprockets. As I have it he got 160km/h on the 4T and 166km/h on the 2T with the 2T running out of usable refs on the sprocket ratio setup. Here is his feedback:

The truck with crane, jack-knifed 15km from Hakskeenpan, tossing the bathrooms into the Kalahari. Thus for 1st 2,5 days we had no showers, cleaning up etc. No big deal for a dirtbiker. Also 1st nite without power, warm beers etc...

The pan is vast.

1st arrivals were the muscle-car and rodder crews from Cape Town. Very colourfull personalities and a renegade air to the event.

1st line-up for running you can see. The Skyline and Ferrari quickly pissed off after their initial 2 runs. Most drivers completely misjudged conditions and results were often embarrassing. The Lambo Gallardo had balls, stayed on and after a spin at 280 befriended the bikers and petrol-plebs to ask and hear how we handle the crosswinds and traction issue...The car is stage 3 and sounds like the devils concubine getting off. He got 298 after 3 days of running all-out.

There were quite a few spin-outs at speeds in excess of 250, loosing traction and the slightest tailjive and it goes South...

The turbo vehicles suffered the most, when the power hits it breaks traction and all hell gets loose, very loose..

Setup for this party is way different than tar and there are complaints about pan and runway surface etc. Fact is this is a very unique condition and to prepare for it is to think and prepare way out the box.

Pretty much alllsorts ran from vintage Speedster, Landcruiser, Lambos, rods, Muscle-cars to turbo go-karts. The Karts also came with big blah blah and camera crews, left quietly.

Even had a race between the Gallardo and a stunt-plane....

The red turbo Busa with 400hp got a very balsy 321 fishtailing allover. The Blue Busa made 600hp but kept breaking with gearboxes and parts flown in and rebuilding in a beduin tent..again kept breaking and final runs were stuck in 4th at 290..

The Aventador was normal aspirated king and got 308, the car is brand new just received after waiting 2,5yrs.. Owner/driver is a proper humble racer, joining us for supper, buying rounds of beers etc. Super dude and his joy was incredible.

Piri from PtaN took his standard Busa to 307, helluva rider.
ZX14 with traction control got 292.

The white KTM 690 made 167.
R1200GS was the fastes "dualsport at 194.

Final results will be out this week

The 2 vintage Porsches were roadtripped 1130km from Gauteng To Kalahari, still gotta hear how their return trip turned out. WE camped together and became good friends, sharing spirit in airheadwonders.
The 58 Speedster is teh very car that won the 1st ever SA 9hr endurance at Grand Central. Priceless and the Californians would freak at this jaunt. I had the honour of driving it into the sunset on the pan, what a feeling and memory.

Every afternoon we would have a free for all on the pan. Just cleaving along at 150 with endless smooth space for speed and maneuvres, its a sensation I can't really relay.

Met so many people and characters, stories etc.

Its been one incredible experience.
WE left on Tue and spent 4 days in Kgalagadi transfrontier park, now thats another mindfark.

Cheers
