« on: October 01, 2012, 05:52:24 pm »
hi guys

I'm 18 and in my final year of school and have decided to ride as far north as i can go next year and am busy setting my route so i have a rough idea where i'm going. so far i am keen to do Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya and if i can Uganda and Ethiopia. don't know if anyone has anything they'd recommend in terms of places to go or to avoid in these countries? planning to leave late January next year. looking for lots of advice about what to take etc and what not to as well as places to go also anyone keen to ride would be awesome even if only for a part of the trip.

check out my RR, link on my signature

Basically you can do SA, Nam, Bots, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania and Moz in 2 or 3 months, if you are planning on riding self sufficient for a year you can easily ride up the rift and around lake victoria and back, and still have 6 months to spare.

I personally think if I had a year I would wrap my mind around the kind of riding I would do and how long I would stay in one place, am I willing to work in an area for a month to raise funds or do some social work and community upliftment projects.. it depends a lot on your budget, trips like this can cost R10 - R20k a month depending on where you stay and how you travel. spending a year in a tent is no fun, i would probably establish home bases and work out from there doing weekly outrides, then move on. There is so many ways you can do this.

I would'nt even waste my time planning a route, with so much time available you will follow a route based on your experience and the touch of those you meet, all I would do is have a goal, what is it you want to achieve from a ride like this, mentally are you prepared to do whatever it takes, can you sit for 5 days in the rain and be ok with that, can you ride in 39 degree heat changing a puncture and just soak it up as the same part of the experience as riding down a path and coming across the most breathtaking beach in Northern Tanzania?

All in all, the hardest part is getting on the bike and leaving.. everything else you can figure out along the way.

The best choice you could make young man...........plenty of time in life for the more mundane and "proper" things :mwink:

Best advise, take it easy and take it slow :thumleft:

Aaaaaahhhhh to be young, have a bike and a dream!! I did it when I was a young guy on a smaller scale on my old XT 500, a 3 month trip was what I did.

My son is also 18, he has a street legal KTM 525 with a long range tank, also taking a GAP YEAR!!

Lucky fellows!! :)

Sounds like a mind blowing trip!
Thanks for your post :)

My som is in Cape Town right now desperately trying to find a job.

He has shelved the idea of a trip.

It seems no-one is taking him seriously because he is only 18.

Anybody got any ideas about where he can find work besides waitering?

He's a deep fellow, can sell birth control to pregnant women  ;D
