The YSter –team’s 2012 Snow Valley Bash via Lesotho
The saying “ spoon full of cement” came up with me few times on this trip…..
An absolute enjoyable experience of epic proportions
Sticks and stones won’t break bones, wave and salute made some going good!!!
It all started with a BBM from Oubok to my wife, “ Wil julle nie saam Lesotho doen op pad Bash toe nie ?”
I pondered and schemed and decided lets do this thing. Closer to the time some more riders joined and the compliment grew to 10 riders on 8 bikes.
Mr. Ys (Johan) our fearless, cool, calm, and collected tour leader (and later a bleeder) 1200GSA (been there done that except for maybe 2 routes we took)
Rassie (Marius) our leaders sidekick, and consultant (been to Lesotho spectating the roof) 800GS with some “standard modifications”
Oubok (Aneke) Rassies wife and pillion….she has come to see the Maluti’s and nearly break a finger ?
Briv (Len) come to see what the Lesotho hype was all about (always hungry in the morning..) KTM 990
Mrs. Briv (Anda) Brivs wife and pillion…. Come to sample and approve the red wine on route! And see Lesotho.
Boere (Ian) he has come to test the KTM 990 in all conditions..And was the cunning linguist. KTM 990
Parrakie ( Brink) Boere’s eldest son (21) who made everybody laugh with his sharp comments XT660
Ball and Chain ( Gerrit ) checked out the flower varieties along the way while fleetlining..and gave a prima example of same tone snoring 7 hours none stop, for 10 nights
Arfar (John) to show us how never to fall, that brandy is very important, and the self appointed security dog (he could bark violently ! )
Hope (Paul) had to pullout on the last as is sister in law passed away…sorry Paul
So now we were 9 on 7 bikes.
We tried to get a meeting going one Friday afternoon a week before the trip but The Hollow tree got in the way !!!
Our first meeting of the whole group would be River Destiny Lodge Saturday afternoon.
Boere , Brink and Arfar left early Friday and meandered through some gravel sections to get to Beaufort West where I and Anda met with them that evening at the Springbok Lodge .
The other guys and lady slabbed it up on Saturday to RDLodge. A lekker settle down and talk kark party ensued getting ready for the next days ride to Clarence.
The next day up and away along the RSA and Lesotho border all the way to Clarence with a few stops in between.
Oubok’s cousin has the Aspen guest house in Clarence where we stayed. Do yourself a favor; we were treated like kings and queens. We took a drive out to the water tunnels and then on to the Golden Gate Hotel, where we were informed that their liquor license was revoked…..we promptly pulled out some brandy and supported the bar in buying some mix.
We left the hotel and proceeded with the braai and some more liquid refreshments. John got very cozy with one of the guard dogs and picked up a few tips ….
Next morning all were getting their final shit together as this was d-day for Lesotho, the start of some serious riding.
