XrAngel's trial by fire (or rather rain)
« on: October 16, 2012, 11:01:01 pm »
So earlier this afternoon xrAngel and I went out in town for her to get more used to her first ever bike.  Before we leave both of us notice the impending weather coming but decide to go anyway, a little water won't kill us.  So after some very successful cornering, braking and balance on her part we stop off to say hi to my dad and then it happens.  Just as we are off the bikes with our helmets off the rain starts coming down, so with no place to park and hide we very quickly don our gear again and she can't get her bike kick started, so I kill mine run to start hers and mount my bike yet again.
I start mine up and as I enter the road I hear the unmistakable clunk of her bike dying.  By now the rain coming down has turned a light shade of white and taken the decision to no longer be a liquid.  Needless to say I rush back, kick the k@k out of the little 200 and order her to get going.  I jump back on my bike and rush after her (rush being a very relative term).
Now it must also be said all the time she has been tailing me to mimic braking distance and so on but now she's in front.  Roughly twenty meters from my house her bike loses velocity a little farther from the stop than it should and I see the rear end squirrel as she dumps it into first.  Now at this moment, all I can do is imagine in horror the bike throwing her off, some part of her anatomy being forced into a shape it shouldn't be and her giving up on biking for the rest of her life, but NO.  She remains perfectly calm and trundles home as if nothing ever happened.  Having achieved a new benchmark of 50 km/h all on her lonesome.
It may sound slow, dull and wet but today will always be one of my favorite riding memories!

hey man, you are lucky that she can share this passion with you

don't rush into it. Glad you guys are fine. Plan your next ride around a forecast, once she gains good experience your little bikes will take you anywhere.

hope to read a lekker ride report with pics & all soon!  :thumleft:

I hate rain. Refuse to ride in it. Good on her!

My first road riding experience on the 250 monkeyboy has involved me being put on to it, and then told to follow him to Fireman's Arms to have a drink with the rest of the dogs.

Man I was terrified! Good fun, though.

How I reported from my side:

so while riding my new bike today for the
second time, we get caught in a rain and
hail storm (well on my bike it was like a
tornado and tsunami and just sh*t going
down!!! ) and of course in all of this I don't
get it kick started! luckily I had my man to
come kick it after secretly swearing at me
cause I keep stalling as he gets on his bike.
Haha good times!!!!

Classic! My boyfriend gets irritated as he has to come and pick up my bike whenever I drop it!

Still remember my first rain, hated it then, still hate it now. Like the mud to play in just after the rain though
I'm not saying kill stupid people, I'm saying, remove the warning labels and let the problem sort itself out.

Hi wallyengles

You guys must go and ride next to the railway track. There is a nice gravel road that is usually in a good condition. Drive towards the dam...past the univercity and astro...straight at the little circle...left at the next road...go over the track and right onto the gravel road.

We will definitely be there tomorrow afernoon!  :ricky:

That's the road to the old military testing ground isn't it? We might take a ride out there!

That's the one yes. Also on the other side of the Ventersdorp road, there's a few nice gravel roads to explore.

Just enjoy the ride... :ricky:

There is only one way to learn to rise in rain and youve done it well done! See you maybe get wet and thats it. Have fun.
