I know a guy that traveled all the way through Botswana, doing at least 50% sand / dirt roads, on his BMW R1200 C. Now, most guys wil say :"It's a 1200, should have the power" but remember this bike is so low, a brick underneath the engine will work as a centre stand. The guys on their GS's would bliksem past him on the sand roads, while he puttered along at 50 km/h, open face helmet, cigarette in the mouth By the time he gets to the camping spot, the fires would be going already He said, next time, they'll join him on THEIR "cruiser" bikes, because he had time to survey the countryside much more than them.

So, if you are going to travel only on tar, good dirt roads and some tweespoor tracks I don't see a problem at all. The bike is also not too heavy, so you'll not work yourself to death provided you use your head when planning a route / taking a turn-off off the beaten track

Started in maraisburg, whole bunch of guys with trailered off roaders, and headed out going behind the mind dump. I didn't drop the bike once!!!!!!!!!!!!! 
Rocks, sand, mud, played stuck in the mud once, played broekkak a few times.
