"Hi all
Just a quick update on the Rallyerider scene.
We have had a crazy week and a half after returning from the Bridge Cape Pioneer cycle race. After re-introducing ourselves to our families we had a media function at The Ridge Casino, ...a few meetings, finalized our Morocco trip and visas for the Merzouga Rally and had a studio session with ignition tv's "the bike show" (Will be screened this Saturday 3/11/2012 on channel 189 @ 12h00 and @ 20h00). And in between all of that, we had to try fit in a few training sessions.
A big thanks to Ronald from expert mining; Adolf for our awesome One Industries and Six Six One kit; Klint from Powasol; Neville from Mechanibike; Paul from Talisman hire and Honda South Africa for getting on board.
We are really grateful for your involvement and contributions towards our 2013 Dakar campaign.
We are now at OR Tambo airport waiting to board our flight to Casablanca via Dubai, after which we have a 12 hour drive to the town of Merzouga (Morocco) where the rally will be based.
All the administrative checks will take place on Saturday, the race starts on Sunday and finishes next Friday"

and then one flight later
"Landed in Casablanca after 17hrs of flying. Eish! 11hr drive to the town of Merzouga"

Hey all

Merzouga update.
We had a long and dodgy trip from Casablanca to Midelt yesterday where we overnighted, then hit the road to Merzouga. After a bit of a detour out of Erfoud and a bit of bundu bashing we landed up at the Tombuctou hotel where the entire event will be based.
We soon realized that there are very few people that speak English around here, but fortunately the team we have rented bikes from has a lady by the name of Ezia that can speak a bit of channel 1. After 2 hrs of getting through all the documentation checks we went for the 3pm navigation training(in French), and then had to attend the 5pm training that would be held in all channels. We have a chilled day tomorrow with bike testing in the morning followed by our technical checks, then a riders briefing followed by a warm up route of 24km and then the prologue of 12km.

We will have pics on our website by tomorrow hopefully (www.rallyerider.com)

Prologue done and dusted.
It appears that Brett had a bit of a bad day, hope everything is OK.

Stage 1 results are in.
Brett back to his low-flying self.
Glen must have pissed off somebody big time. He has been given an 11h33min penalty!  :eek7:
Information is a bit difficult to come by, but I wonder whether he missed a whole bunch of waypoints. Pure speculation.
I see Brett and Glen are riding Beta's, not Honda's. It would be quite interesting to hear how the two compare.

11:30 penalty is nuts, that's more than a full days riding  ???
Present bikes: BETA 300RR, KTM 690, Yamaha WR250F

If you're dumb you gotta be tough !!!

From http://www.merzougarally.com:
The big dunes of the Erg Chebbi were the theatre of the arrival of the first stage of the Merzouga Rally, 171 kms of selective sectors with a very fast first part till the refuelling in the village of Taous an then a second part with a  technical navigation in the dunes, before the arrival at the Kasbah Tombouctou, where is located the bivouac of the rally.
Desert and chronometer but also an occasion to enjoy the desert with the safety of the race as the  6 times World Enduro Champion and third on the Dakar (2006)  Giovanni Sala (ITA) confirmed: “This is my second year and I really enjoy the formula of the Merzouga Rally. It’s ideal for those who approach the desert for the first time, thanks to the great attention given to safety, but it’s also a race with a technical navigation, then in the evening you can enjoy the atmosphere of the desert with the friends. I crossed the finish first today but I think I will get some penalties as I missed some way points in the dunes at the very end of the stage”.

Arturo Casanova (ESP): “It was a demanding first stage, especially the second part in the dunes. It was very hot, with the temperature heating the 40 degrees and it was difficult to maintain the concentration. I tried to do my best, paying a lot of attention to the navigation and hopefully I did a good stage”.

Ben Grabham (AUS): “I did the best time in the prologue and so I opened the track of the first stage.  I was comfortable on the first part till the refuelling because it was fast piste on a hard track, similar to what we are used to in Australia. I struggled a bit in the dunes because this is my first time that I navigate with road book and GPS but I’m happy because I’m learning a lot as we are using here the same navigation tools that we will find on the Dakar”.

Pedro Bianchi Prata (POR) : “It was a hard first stage especially for the heat. The navigation in the dunes was very technical, but i enjoyed the feeling of the open desert”.

Nicolas Alberto Cadorna (VEN): “I’m at Merzouga with my team mates Eraso Rafael Anglade and  Gustavo Adolfo Querales of the Venezuela Team to finalise the preparation for the Dakar. We will focus on the navigation combining race and training”

Nice pics, must be awesome. Wonder if Glen just did not start again? If he got home late they should have been able to fix his bike. ???
