Getting endo-ed by a car has never been something that I've aspired to, but on this this it'll be real big pain in the @ss!

What's the stuff around the header pipes ?

Header wrap. Makes for better thermal efficiency by trapping the heat inside the exhaust, as an offspin you get better performance due to decreased back-pressure.
